Here's the deal, I have a small alpine amp under my driver seat. The only one I could find at the time small enough for my area to work with. Everything is good, but it's a 2ohm amp, and I'm pushing roughly 1.5 ohm.. I could wire it for 3.. But we all know that's not enough boom..
Anyways it has been working fine for some time until recently. Even on 1.5 it never used to get hot. Still doesn't. But today, 5 mins in the car shut down.. Still not hot, and the on light is lit. All my fuses are good, and I don't know what the problem is.
If I turn off the car, it comes back.. So I'm guessing a protection mode. Do you think a couple months of 1.5ohm fried it up? Should i try and go back to 3ohm or buy a new sub?

Most likely... running a 2 ohm stable amp at 1.5 ohms will work, but the question is for how long. I have an old Orion cobalt 2 channel amp that's rated at 4 ohms but has been running at 2 ohms for years now.
Think of it this way.. you *can* remove the rev limiter on a H22A and run it up to say 8500 rpm or a touch higher verse the OEM 7800 rpm limiter, and it will work but for how long.
Also, check to make sure your subs ohm out ok

it has to be the amp.
when it stopped bumping, i got home, and checked the AC voltage out of the amp leads at the sub, and nothing.
then i checked the DC voltage at the amp, and the fuses are good.
and im still getting 1.5 ohm on the sub.
so the amp has to be on its last leg. either that, or i should re-wire to 3ohm, and take a load off the amp and try and baby it alittle longer.
crappy thing about the amp and its protection mode, once it shuts down, there's no indicating light, that tells you when its shut down. you must de-energize the remote wire, and send another hot signal to reset the amp. its not like a thermal sensor, when it cools down to a point, it starts working again. kinda frustrating when it happens, and the amp is barley warm to the touch.

got into my box, and realized my sub is a dual 2ohm. so before i was prolly close to 1ohm. now im series at 4ohm.. and its not as loud, but ive not had a shut down yet.
so.. thats where it ends. just FYI for the archive.
