id get the new 2-way viper Alarm, i think its the 790?? not positive though, with a digital mercury switch (goes off if someone jacks your car up), a glass break sensor, a proximity sensor, and rig it up to do fuel cut-off when disarmed!

Any auto security system made by DEI (e.g. Viper, Python, Clifford, Hornet, Avital) is a good bet. A given system's effectiveness is more in the install rather than the alarm brand or total cost. A poorly installed $1000 system is not going to be nearly as effective as a well installed $200 system. Among many other things, a good install involves hiding the alarm brain well, camouflaging all its wiring, using a hood lock and battery backups for the siren. I've heard the installers at most retail chains (eg B.B. and C.C.) will just zip tie the alarm brain in plain sight underneath the dash. It wouldn't take a genius thief to figure out how to defeat an alarm system installed in that manner.

Here are a couple of links for some more advice on car alarms and auto security in general.

saying DEI is the best is just your opinion. I think DEI sucks and Audiovox is better. I work in a shop and we get more repair calls for DEI crap than any of the Audiovox stuff we ever install. just my opinion.

I've always wondered about alarms... seems to me that you can pop the hood and cut the speaker wires and then it's over back up batt don't help either.. if you don't hear it for those few seconds then the theives still can do what they do. Someone please correct me on this.

thats why you put the main siren inside the bumper, hide the wiring well, and have a backup siren inside the car.

DEI also makes what is called a Peizo Tweeter (aka Pain Generator). It's model is 513t, it only costs $30 and it will definately keep a theif from being inside or around your car for long. These tweeters can be hidden in several places and produce a very high pitched, extremely loud noice. We usually install two of them, but even with just one, it hurts to sit inside the car with it going off.

As far as comparing Audiovox to DEI. DEI has been a much better alarm for us. We have about the same amount comeback as audiovox, but we sell twice the amount of DEI.

I do suggest getting the 791x by DEI. This is a very nice alarm with two-way paging ability.

Can these tweeters be added onto the Clifford Intelliguard 850? I'll be having one installed soon, but couldn't find any info on the tweeters on the Clifford site. I'm assuming I could just tap them into the siren signal wire?

As stated before...Any security system is only as effective as the installation. I have installed countless systems from various companies
in my 20 years of doing this. The failure rate is about the same for all. What
really gets me is the consumer decides the level of protection they want.
For a virtually invisable and secure system to be installed it can take an
average of 8-12 hours. I can hear the WTF's now. We are a group of consumers who want it done for the least amount of time and coinage out of
our pocket. A good installer who takes pride in his work can be found in both
the big chains and the little ma & pa shops..you just have to search them out.
Ask questions..or see if they ask question about your lifestyle ( ie do you work
late nites,early morn/urban /surburban area/garage/parking lot etc) That way
aystem can be custom tailored to you and your car.

yeah, i just tapped mine into the main siren's wiring. 2 sirens are kosher without using relays. the dei piezos can be found for as little as 10 bucks. well worth it.

As an installer. I have to agree that the installation is the most important thing about a car. Basic installation at many chain stores does not even include hooking a trigger up to the trunk. In any event, you get what you pay for. If you want an alarm that only has starter kill, then there isn't much point in hiding the alarm too well since reconnecting a start wire is pretty easy anyways and you don't even need to find the brain to do that.

i was broke and best buys free install sounded tempting. needless to say the job was complete slop and i ended up just rewiring the whole thing myself. not only was the brain just zip tied to the steering column but all the wires were either hanging down in plain view or intertwined in my pedals. i was pretty furious but like yall said, you get what you pay for. i ended up reconfiguring the install- adding a glass sensor, verad leds(bright as fuuuuck), piezo siren- and moving the main siren from my shock tower to inside the bumper. **** best buy.

You have to wonder about about a person that is fully prepaird to spend $200 or $300 or more on the alarm but not $200 or $300 on the install.
