Alarm for wheels
I plan to get some 18" or 19" wheels and the car lives outside 24/6. The wheels are the only thing I'm concern about. If they want to take the whole car, go ahead (you know what I mean), but don't just take the wheels and leave me stranded, AND can't get my other car out of the garage.
My entire hood is safe, but there are homies that cruise through it wanting to do crime.
It's been more than a decade since I kept up. Anything new in alarm technology that I should look into just for protecting the wheels?
Also, because the area is windy, quiet, and even a large truck going by and set off the alarm, so I would like to turn it down the sensitivity.
Basically, I need the alarm to detect tools banging on the car, and car being lifted, etc. Asking too much?
If there is no security, then I may not get new wheels.
Educate me on suggestions?
TIA

i suggest you go with the DEI family for an alarm. You'll find a number of useful accessories here. If you are scared of losing your wheels then i'd suggest maybe having at least 2 different wheel locks on each of your wheels.. just my opinion. Also a bright Led seen from far will deter thieves before they approach your vehicle. I'd also suggest a dash cam to record overnight activity so you can at least have an idea of how many people come around or check out your car. Good luck!

You can get a shock sensor that will go off if the suspension moves but if a thief want your wheels he will get them. You can put blocks under the suspension, remove the lug nuts and let the air out of the tires with out even moving the suspension making the alarm useless. The lugnut locks are your best bet but those can be taken off with the steel putty that hardens. You push the putty into an old socket and then push it into the lock making a mold. Come back in 24 hour and the wheels are as good as gone. Use multiple wheel locks on different wheels to make it harder because usually they will only do one wheel thinking the rest will be the same.
There might be a sensor these days that will detect the wheel being removed from the hub but cant be 100%.
All that light does is show a professional thief he has a alarm to bypass before he breaks in. I rather not have the light so the thief thinks I am a dumbass without an alarm therefore doesn't look for one to bypass.
Cameras are a great thing. You can mount one in your car or near it. I have a camera on my front porch so you can see my entire driveway. Of coarse my eg6 stays in the garage while my Lexus is parked in the driveway!!! People think it's dumb but people on H-T understand.

One of my neighbor did install a camera on the roof pointing to the driveway. So I guess something must have happened to his car. The car was all OEM and nothing special. But like I said, there are punks the goes by. Not sure of the camera is live or just BS. I would "hate" to be like that, but.....

At the end of the day it's your property you are trying to protect and you should. Cameras are a great tool in providing evidence and proof to get that vandal off the streets. You wouldn't consider it until you become a victim and realize what you lost and what's not replaceable. Don't wait for it to reach that extent.
There are alot of people that will say alarms will do nonething in your case.. But thats far from the truth. Most if not all have no true experience in setting up a proper alarm setup from the start. And it shows in there post.
Your first going to want to start with the base alarm. 2 way pager would be good. But not needed. Your going to need a dei 520t. This is one of the most important add on to any alarm system. If anyone tries to tamper with your car sets off the alarm. There is no way to power down the alarm. Period. But the key to this to work is to make sure the alarm brain is hidden well in the car. NOt just thrown under the dash. A theif should never have anytime to find the brain if he is able to get into the car. Period. Second.. You should have a hood pin. This will set the car alarm to full trigger and get the ball rolling before the theif goes for the battery. Third is that the siren should never be in a visual or any place were a theif can cut or tamper with it. What your trying to acheive here is to take every advantage from the theif. No theif is going to sit there and risk getting caught trying to shut up a car he cannot.
Now that you have that part covered. Let look at the wheels. What I would do and have done before for customers that have $$$ in there rims. I would set up a mercury switch on the car on or on each 4 corners on the car. This will pick up the slightest movenment of the car. You have to either jack the car up or dis inflate the tires to steal. This will pick this up. Setup and planning is the key. You could add a gps unit that has a motion sensor. This works really well to. I have this setup on my navigator that took awhile to tune. With the air suspension being active just the slight movement would trigger a phone call.

Valid point. but i like to have some sort of warning light in combination with a camera.. they will approach your vehicle to examine it.. Hopefully the dash camera picks them up. They will realize a camera is there recording them and if they're smart they will flee. Next time they will think twice before messing with that vehicle. Thieves are smart so therefore we as car owners MUST be smarter. Go the extra mile to amp up your security.
The light can deter a amateur but any one with any knowledge of car security will see that light reach up under the hood and cut the siren.
And to emphasize on the element of surprise. My ideal security set up is a 2-way alarm with a one mile capability, installed as stealthy as possible( probably the most important part of an car alarm. I have seen alarm wire literally hanging in plan sight so the thief doesn't have to work hard), blue flashing light is blacked out on antenna, gps tracking( 2 if you can afford the monthly fee's. I do like the cheap burner phone idea where they have gps built in but I wouldn't trust it as the only gps tracker), siren located inside of car(your going to have to set it off to get it, there is no other way) shock sensors, glass sensor(glass breaks at a certain frequency and the sensor picks it up), hood & trunk sensors, doors, ect.(In a honda several killswitches. If you don't have cruise control get the switches for it and use those to for kill switches) The most obvious is more than often over looked when someone is in a rush looking for killswitches.
A camera to watch it all. If they do by some chance get the car or damage it, I at least have proof of who it was(a HD camera is well worth the money if it does result to needed evidence).
My fear is really not in my driveway because my house is secure and under watch. It is when I am out and about.
If the wheels use tuners style locks, there are so many brands with the spline style, it will be hard for a thief to get those off esp with the limited amount of space.
Get some spline lugs and then for extra protection get a mcgard tuner style lock set as well.
If you are super serious throw on a boot wheel lock as well.

I rather have the element of surprise because if my alarm or dog's go off I will be outside with my AR-15 in less than 15 seconds holding them at gun point until ole Johnny Law arrives.

LOL! if you keep close eye on your car with an AR-15 then i definitely need to come park my car by you! I live in a dead end street and as you can guess its pretty dark over here with just one crappy streetlight, a lot of people come and go because they can pretty much do what they want in the area without anyone getting a good look at them. I've installed a sensor light at the side of my house now that instantly comes on when someone walks by or drives up my driveway. I have several cameras installed on the house with night vision and the extra sensor light i put up really helps the camera pick up a clearer image. But like you said.. that is all defeated the minute you park away from home. I like the idea of hiding the kill switches at various locations in plain sight. A lot of people will say if a car burglar really wants your car they will get it, while that may be true i would also make stealing my car a very time consuming and difficult task for that loser.
I like the idea of the mercury switches, Are those usually installed at each wheel or somewhere else? I agree if an alarm is installed properly and hidden from its usual installation spot, It would take a thieve quite some time to hush your car maybe even flee the scene. I also like the idea of gps and locating devices but aren't those useless if the power to the vehicle is cut or disrupted? or are they self powered?

^^^ Correct. Any alarm or gps system should have there own power supply. If not, then its not a good setup. If your unit is not calling you when the battery is unplugged or the car is moved. Its also not a good unit.
