Adding an Amp with a Line Output Converter
I tried doing a search on this but couldn't find anything.
My bf is trying to hook up an amp to his factory head unit. From what we understand, one way of doing this is to use a line output converter (LOC).
I thought that the way you wire it is to cut the existing speaker wire and connect the LOC to the head unit. Then, connect the LOC to the amp with the RCA wires, and run speaker wires from the amp to the speakers.
We weren't completely sure, so we went to Best Buy and asked the guys at the installation bay. They said you don't have to cut the wires. Instead, just connect the LOC by splicing into the speaker wire. So we wired everything up, but it seems like we can't adjust the sound. What I mean is that, the amp has the dials to adjust the low, mid, and high range, but when we turn them, it all sounds the same. Is this normal?

The installer at best buy did not undestand that you wanted to amplify the speakers, the way he had you wire it was to add a sub or more speakers.
You had it right the way you though it was supposed to be done.
What kind of amp? a lot of amps now a days have speaker level inputs, tha LOC is in the amp.
hope this helps.

yea fcm is right. if you wanna amplify your speakers you'll have to cut the wire, and not splice it. the only reason to splice would be if you wanted to add a subwoofer.
why would you amp speakers using a factory deck is my question?
Just for reference, if you use a LLO adapter, you will lose some ability over your bass at your subs.

There are plenty of reasons....
don't want to invest in a new headunit
most new heads are ugly
don't want to add to the steal me effect of car audio
you can get great performace using an loc with an aftermarket head
today's cars are far more integrated making aftermarket heads difficult to install

using an loc properly won't limit your ability to use subwoofers - it may hamper how you fade them in and out, or limit your ability to control the volume of other speakers, but the subs will work just fine...

Because the dash does not allow you to change the stereo in all cars, such as mine.

I never said you couldnt get the subs to work, i said you would lose some control over bass. Less bass in the whole car, and you can't turn down just the subs from the HU.
And plus there is a difference between a line output converter and a low level output.

It's pretty hard to qualify what you meant by "ability" so I just wanted to throw out some facts.
I don't understand why you claim to lose bass in thw whole car - what do you mean by LLO - I've never heard that term - can you clarify please?
