3rd Gen Stereo Help
Hey guys, I just picked up a really clean 1991 Honda Prelude with 50,000 miles and I want to keep it completely stock, except that the stereo sucks. How big are the speakers up front and in the back? And what are my options for an oem cd player that will fit in place of the cassette player? Thanks!
If your looking to keep it a simple as possible the stock speakers are either a 4" or 6-1/2" and the rears are 4", if it is an Si it will be standard6.5" front and rear.
If you pull the stock speakers, you will know for sure what size you have.
If you have, or can borrow the tools, some basic skills you can install up to an over-sized 6.5" speakers at "stock" locations and behind stock grills both front and rear, no matter what speakers you have know.

I forgot to mention it is an Si, so I guess I have 6.5" speakers. Now if someone could help me figure out how to change the cassette player for an OEM CD player, I'd be all set. The CD Player doesn't need to belong to a prelude, just a Honda CD player that will fit in the stock location. Thanks!
Pretty much any Honda/Acura HU up to 97/98 that uses the same "rear mount" system, [there are lots] will be plug and play.
ISO mount units, [side mounting] will require some mods, very easy with your car.

Most post 97/98 single din HUs, [where you will find CD HUs] will need adapter harnesses, [found at any car audio store] but mounting will be the same, rear mounts will be the easiest, ISO mounts will require some mods, but again, very easy on your car.
I know you said you wanted to keep it stock except for the stereo, because it "sucks", changing the speakers and still using a stock HU, [even a CD HU] will only make it suck a little less, the limiting factor in SQ in an OEM system is the HU, not the speakers.
A much bigger diff. in SQ can be made by changing the HU instead of the speakers, [assuming speakers are still OK after 17+ years].

Thanks for the info! I use a Nakamichi CD400 as a source in my other car with some amps I designed, so I'm not a complete stranger to audio. I want to keep it really stock because this car is like a time capsule! It looks and feels absolutely new. I would feel bad doing anything to this car, but the speakers would be easy enough to change back if I wanted to. I was hoping that there was some oem cd player that sounded much better than most of them, but if not, I'll figure something else out. Thanks!
It's just as easy to reinstall the stock HU later, as long as you use the adapter harness.
A late model stock CD HU is definitely going to sound better then a 91 stock cass. HU.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...sting remove the pocket and this would work.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...ZWDVW same for this.
You may not even need the adapter harnesses as some late model Integras still used the up to 97/98 harness.
Here's one from a Civic... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...ZWDVW
One from a Lude... http://cgi.ebay.com/HONDA-PREL...wItem
And a bunch more... http://search.ebay.com/honda-C...em120 only the single din HUs will fit.
