Default 10" sub recommendations?

hey guys. i want to get 2 10" subs, and i used to think i wanted 2 jl audio 10w3's, but then some people told me that they blow easily if overpowered or whatever.. and so i thought maybe i shouldnt get them. then i thought about 2 10" infinity kappa perfect's, but i heard they "aren't that great"..a couple people have recommended that i get alpine type-r's, or rockford fosgate he2's... so now im not sure what i want. im going to get an alpine 7894 head unit, but not sure on amp yet... and im keeping the stock speakers for mids/highs for now until i save up for them. so can you guys recommend 2 10" subs that i should get? im not sure whats good and whats not. thanks a lot for any help.

Are you looking for SQ or SPL?

What are you looking to spend on subs? On an amp?

Uh, if you overpower any sub beyond it's recommended input...then obviously it'll blow.

But JL's are great. I have a pair of 10w0's in the trunk and it hits enough for me. I'm not into the SPL contests in the parking lots, but I can hang with the best of them if I wanted to. But they're not overpowering, so your soundstage stays up front, and not all the way in the back, echoing off the subs. It's a good all around sub for the price.

im probably wanting to go with SQ in the end, but i love bass. i dont want so much bass where i cant hear the mids/highs. i guess i just want the ability to have mad bass when i want and the rest of the time just really nice bass (i guess like you're talking about, 98ctrcoupe). for prices, im not sure how little i can get away with spending on subs.. im willing to spend however much it takes to get good subs that im happy with. and for the amp, im hoping for less than 300.. but again if needed i could spend more. can you guys suggest anywhere to buy the subs/amp online? because nowhere locally sells them cheap at all. thanks for all the help

That sounds good man... I would go with what you want.... I have had 5 different brands of subs in cars before... I also used to do some installs... My favorite brand has to be Rockford Fosgate in general... They sound the best for my dollar... Of course, I might be biased and it might not help to think I have 2 10" RF HX2's in my trunk.... All kinds of subs are good... But get a Name brand...Thats my advice... One you have heard of... They tend not to be gay as I like to put it... I hate the ones that say 450W on the front of the sub and all they can take is 75RMSwith max output being 450..... U know what I mean... Looks are important and quality stems from there.... Let us know what price you are looking for... I would go with JL,MTX, Kicker, or RF(my favorite)... Some others are good.. LIke Alpine, or Polk, or infinity..... OK, I got an IDEA... [Crutchfield.com] <---Go there, but dont buy from there because they are pricey ..... They have the best brands with none of the junk.. Choose a few you like the looks of and narrow it down by seeing their RMS watts rating.... Higher Rms means more power handling.... Then, price is an easy decider.... For my money, i would go with one of the first 4 though... Let us know what ones you take a liking too... I would go ebay or a cheap alternative site for best bucks... Ebay saved me a lil over $140 from what crutchfield wanted for my subs.. Just let us know and we will send out or abilities and troops...

Trust me, having a big SPL system will get old in a few weeks. You can't really play it loud when you're driving since it'll distract you from driving. And you definitely won't be able to hear any music once the bass hits. Where's the enjoyment in that?

My JL's cost only $90/ea. They are easily affordable (at least for me it was), and it met my personal taste when it comes to QUALITY bass and SQ. I'm only pushing them with about 125 watts and they pound when I turn it up.

But its up to you. Try and find a shop where they have the subs all setup in a display. Listen to the one you like and get what you can afford. Just don't go with Pyramid or Thump or something.

Infinity Perfect 10 was teh best sub i have ever had, hands down.

iv had:
infinity kappa 10
solo baric 12
infinity perf. 10
JL 10w3v2

Hit the hardiest, cleaniest, and lowiest of all. Solo baric was a little louder, actually, but the infinity was so much tighter and cleaner....

$140 ish on Ebay

You WILL NOT beat that for that price. $300ish shipped

and http://adireaudio.com/mobile_audio/d...hma_series.htm
Go with the 12"

Pure sonic bliss. This sub is on par with the JL W7 (I'm sure you've heard of it) and will sound rediculously good and get stupid loud.

2 10" Brahmas = $700 http://www.ampmanaudio.com/products/details.asp?id=1533

You don't want the aforementioned amps if you want 2 of these subs though...

Uh, if you overpower any sub beyond it's recommended input...then obviously it'll blow.
Huh??? Contrary to popular belief (and message board folklore), it's easier to blow a speaker (any kind of driver...subs included) by UNDERPOWERING it and not overpowering it. It's all about gain and distortion, the less gain needed, the less distortion. Odd harmonic distortion created by pushing an amp too hard (because it's underpowered for the driver) will kill a voice coil.

So...it's a good thing to have an amp that can push more power than the driver needs. It allows you to keep the gain down on that amp, so it runs cooler and cleaner, while still providing an adequate signal.

another myth of a myth...
the only way you'll blow the sub/speaker by underpowering is if you try to crank the gain up to try to "gain" more output. other than that, there is NO way you can blow the speaker/sub by underpowering (with gains set properly). i repeat, NO way you can blow a speaker by underpowering. underpowering will only limit the woofer's capability to a certain SPL.

I think his comment is provided for the layperson, but a differentiation needs be made here of course.

As said you will not blow a speaker with an underpowered amp if you have it setup to provide CLEAN power. Running the amp beyond its capabilities causes clipping which is very bad for your speakers, and does not sound good either.

Agreed. The Infinity Perfect line of subs have proven to be very dynamic in their performance. This was Infinity's goal and purpose in creating them. I have heard from many of our customers how nice they really are. In addition I have heard them and can attest to thier excellent overall ability.

And of course.............we sell them!

If you guys mentioned the ED amps, I'm surprised you haven't touched upon their subs. The K series is a superb bang for the buck. $125/driver! 400wRMS recommended power, and I've never heard a single bad review about it. On par with the IDQ v2s, the JL W6v2s, etc, etc. The A series is more money ($270/driver), but its also a higher SPL sub too. 650wRMS (though more is probably better IMHO), and is in line with Adire Audio Brahmas, IDMAXs, JL W7s, etc. One of the best bargains on that end of the market. ED is a small company, with very little exposure to the mass market. But from what I've heard, they're probably the best value there is today.

Does ED do their ratings by vc(that is oldskool). I always thought the e12a was 1300 watts rms. Their page shows 650, but also says use between 500-1200 watts.

Judging by this I am really confused. I guess it depends on how safe you want to be. http://www.edesignaudio.com/ep/ats.htm

yup. thermal rating. can't rate for mechanical since no one is going to all build the same box. they recommend 650 watts RMS for daily use (which he believes is loud for anyone that doesn't want to damage their ears). the 1500 watts RMS rating is if you know what you're doing (dont go put them in a 4 cubic feet sealed box now
