Default D16Y7/Y8 MiniMe first timer

What's up everyone. I'm new to the forum but I've been researching threads on here for a while. I came across a deal that was too good to be true. I found an old lady 1 owner 96 Civic CX with 100K on the odo. She sold it to a friend of a friend that let it sit in his garage for 3 years. He was going to do a B20 Drag build but ended up having to move to Colorado. It is taken apart about 80% and came with extra goodies. I was told that the existing D16Y7 was running but had some sort of head issue. That works for me because I want to do a MiniMe build. Seems interesting and will give me a change to learn about these engines. I've compiled a list of items I want to get. Feel free to chime in. The items I've chosen are based of things I've seen in other builds and seem to be the basic recipe. I'm sure there will be other major and minor parts I may need to complete this. So far, this is what I'm looking at.

Honda Civic D16Y8 Del Sol Cylinder Head VTEC 1.6 Complete #P2J 96-98 ONLY $265.00
Honda Civic D16Y8 Valve cover $65.00
96-00 Honda Civic Del Sol 1.6L D16Y D16Y7 D16Y8 Engine Head Gasket Set METAL $49.50
ARP CONNECTING ROD BOLTS + HEAD STUDS HONDA D16Y D16Y7 D16Y8 & MINI-ME BUILDS $179.00
1320 Performance D series RMF header with testpipe D15 D16 D16z6 D16y8 $299.00 (This may be revised. I may be able to get one of my buddies to make me something custom. We'll see)
96-00 Honda Civic OEM intake manifold injectors fuel rail EX vtec SOHC M/T $127.49
Honda Civic D16Y8 Valve cover $65.00
New Timing Belt Kit Fits 1992-00 Honda Civic del Sol 1.6L SOHC D16Y7 D16Y8 D16Z6 $22.00
Honda Civic OBD2 VTEC Swap Wiring Subharness Mini Me Y7 to Y8 Conversion Package $60.00
96-98 HONDA CIVIC EX VTEC d16y8 ECU MANUAL TRANSMISSION P2P-A31 $65.00 ( I have to read up more on ECUs and I've seen some that say P2P-A31, P2P-A34, P2P-L22. What do the last 3 characters denote?)
96 97 98 99 00 HONDA CIVIC TRANSMISSION TRANSAXLE 1.6L SOHC VTEC MANUAL MT $200-299.00 (Seems as though people chose this transmission over the standard transmission)
I know flywheels have different weights so I need help on that
I will also need help on the clutch kit.

This is it so far but I'll be adding more as I go!! I got a pile of parts as you can see.

It came with a B20B
17x8 Sparco wheels/w tires
So far I bought a new hood, fenders, headlights and tail lights. They were really faded and had some damage not worth fixing.

Don't mind the over fender. That's for my Cressida.

Cheers,

Chewy

What timing belt are you looking at? i would say use at least an oem or a gates belt, and oem headgasket. Might be better if you get an obd1 ecu and jumper harness so you can have it chipped and tuned. Also careful on the head studs im having a problem with d16y head studs in my d16y8 being too long.. Whats wrong with the b20b? thats a nice torquey motor

Thanks for the advice. I'm going about this pretty calculated. I'm reading a lot on here and other forums. I could have gone with the B20 but there is something about using the existing engine and changing it into something else that appeals to me. I thought about several other swaps but this one seems pretty simple and since I'm a newb, I think I could tackle this myself with some help.

It is my understanding that it would be best to get a metal head gasket so that's what I picked the set I listed. I'm not married to it though.
Cool deal on the ECU. I'm researching that too.
Good advise on the head studs. They make a set specifically for a D16Y7/Y8 swap so I'm going to try that out.

I personally like to plan. I'm the sort that has his tools organized before I even touch the car. I downloaded the FSM so I could start putting everything back together interior wise. I'm ordering OEM clips as some of them have cracked and are not usable. When I purchased the car it had bad left side upper ball joint. I will eventually go aftermarket after I see how the car handles on the street and on the track.

Factory front suspension arms with ball joints pressed in from the factory.

While I wait for this to come in, I'm going to tackle the interior. I currently have no front or backseats which I'm not too worried about. For right now I want to put all the components back where they're supposed to go. All of the panels are off save for the rear pillars and headliner. I have to redo the headliner as well as the visors. They're TOAST. One thing that's exciting about this is all the stuff I'm learning. I know a lot of you already know all this stuff so bear with me as I progress through this.

The engine bay was much dirtier. I know.. how is that possible. I took a leaf blower to it. Once my suspension parts come in I'll be able to roll the car outside and give it a proper cleaning. I got it with most of the items connected to the engine had already been removed so cleaning will be easy.

I've heard mixed reviews about the S40 transmission. Some say they are really weak. From what I'm reading people change some of the internals or get a different stronger transmission. I need to look into this more. The car will be a weekend event car and mostly spirited driving. That's all for now. Compiling more lists!! Doing more research.

Minor Update: I didn't really do anything over the weekend. Just super busy. Linked up with a buddy who is a real Honda nut. I build and insane B series DA. Sounded so crazy with the lope at idle. Sounded crazy period haha.

My front suspension is coming in on Friday. So for the rest of the week I'll be putting the interior back together and hanging all the parts that I got. So, hood, fender, headlights and taillights. After I get the arms, I'll get those on and then switch out the 13 inch wheels for some 17s

Small update and a bit of confusion/second thoughts

So I started hanging parts on the car. Got the fenders and wheels on. It's donkey height (pictures later) and it's hilarious. So I'm torn with doing the Mini-Me and just dropping a 96-00 D15B as its less cost than massing parts to do the mini me and I'll be up and running faster. I think I just answered my own query. So this may change. I also found that King Motorsports makes a cam for this motor. I think this is the road I'll be going down. I really have to clean the car. It's filthy. There's so much dust. I got my suspension in but I need the lower ball joint that's pressed into the knuckle. I also need a stud for the rear drivers side drum. It only has 3. I was considering doing a disc conversion in the rear but from what I have read and for my needs, it's not really necessary. I've heard that the D15 trans is weak too? But then again I'm no going to be going nuts with it. I'll probably just wait because the next iteration of this car will be a K series for sure. The wheels look great on the car. I found a site with tons of EK9 CTR parts. I'm a JDM nerd. I can't help it. So it will have some Type R trinkets.

Cheers
