yeah another e85 question
has anyone actually built a motor that was planned to run e85 or have most just tried it and liked it?

Re: (h2b_eg8)
as far as i know the optimal cp for an na motor on ethanol varies from 13.5 to 15 i may be wrong but?.....i was told by a rep from our local plant that there is no possible way for a said motor to make the same hp tq on ethanol as it would with regular gas because ethanol cannot produce the same amount of btu's as gas unless an additive is added, but if the same motor with no other changes exept for higher cp and more fuel is run on e it will or should make the same hp or higher, and even with the large amount of added fuel it should see the same mpg, i didnt believe it i wanted to try it out but we tried it in a neon first, this neon does low 13's and all it has is a header a cam(yeah its a single) megasquirt and higher cp pistons, he wont say what cp he runs but he does get 35+ mpg, point said and done it shall be the future fuel if automakers quit playing around with this flex fuel **** and start building cars that are actually ment to run on it if that happens people will hopefully open their eyes and realize the potential of this fuel....ohh and in my town e85 is 1.89 a gallon and shell v-power is 2.98, a 55 gallon drum of straight ethonal is 110 bucks, from the plant so you guys can do the math from there

Re: (h2b_eg8)
forgot to add this but my teg will be at the track street tuned on e85 in two weeks i'll let you know what it does....last time it ran a 15.05 at 89mph with 1.9 60's its a pos gsr with a p72 head on a first gen 16 block skunk mani dc header and type r cams right before the 15 run it did 157hp and 115tq with the base timing set at 10* cause it was detonating, now with the e and a street tune timing is set back to stock and it picked up a hella-lota seat of the pants feel top end sooooooo i'm hoping to get into the 14's with it....same cp same comuter just more timing and better fuel

We've had very good luck with it here in minnesota on some all motor and turbo cars... I have nothing but good things to say about it!
Most recent e85 tune i did was on a buddies daily driven integra. Last year the car was trapping 112mph on 93 octane and this year 117-118mph. Alot less motor this year too.
last year was an 84mm block 9:1's,itr cylinder head and cams, and a victor-x manifold.
this year is an 81.5mm bore,9:1's,stock b16 cylinder head and cams, and blox intake manifold.
Same set-up in every other aspect.
Pat(lohatch) has some recent 110octane vs e85 dyno comparisons he may want to share.

Re: (G-Harry)
Ive talked to guys running e85 on serious all motor builds . . . . basically you got to run any were between 660cc-750cc injectors and a good tune basically like running race gas.

Yes good point i will be getting 660cc injectors this is due to that fact that it takes more fuel to make the same power i believe...

i believe e85 is close to 106octane right out the pump.

E85 is not straight ethanol. It's 85%, hence the name: E for ethanol, and 85 for 85%. The other 15% is still petrol...
I just watched a top-gear clip on Youtube of a supercharged Lotus E85 Exige that is smoking fast and has some good info...
http://youtube.com/watch?v=kBzmmO-3Cdo
Plus this clip of a N/A subaru 2.5 RS on the dyno that had switched to E85:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MB-rs3B83uc
I wonder how well the OEM O2 sensors will work if you switch to E85 (subaru article says everything works perfectly)? Will they still measure stoic even though E85 runs much richer than gasoline? I suppose it should since they measure lambda and not actual a/f. I also wonder how well OEM catalytic converters will work/last with the stuff. It would be cool to see the emissions difference before & after someone made the switch. Does anybody know if you can get an emissions check "off-the-record"?

E-85 is the dashed line
110 VP is the solid line
both run on the same day with the same combo and both corrected. both tuned for the individual fuel. the only thing that may skew the comparison is that i did not try adding in additional ign timing with the 110 because i felt i was already pushing it with the timing. so that may have picked up the 110 some. so take it for what it's worth. i have no biased towards either fuel.
this was on a turbocharged 600cc honda engine through a 19mm restrictor.
i ran it and went 12.009@113 at 13.7:1 static compression this past season and i am going to run ethonal again this season

Re: (94eg!)
i'm just saying i had no bias when doing the testing. if the 110 would have won out i would have shared that information as well. i didnt want people to think because i personally run it that i tried to make it look better. somebody else might encounter different results. i just thought it was interesting.

I've been wanting to do that with the crappy CX motor I have taking up space in my garage. I just can't figure out how to shift it if the motor is behind me.

Re: (94eg!)
if you really wanted to do something like this i would just watch ebay and pick up a bike engine. that way the tranny is integrated right into the engine and it will be light and compact. pick up a 4stroke motocross engine and put it in a go cart
