All I have is a stock 1g B16 with a dc header and a crap short ram. Its a88' CRX Si, with power windows (little heavier than normal doors, also jdm
) and for the price. I'd say its the best way to go.

I have owned CRXs for the past 5 years. I had a SI motor, i had a DOHC ZC, i had a B16 with S2S1s, now i have a fully built OEM internals GSR . I must say with all the swaps, hassels, etc, the first Gen B16 is the best swap in a CRX you can do IMO. especially for the beginner. ZCs are cheaper but they dont have nearly as much aftermarket support as the VTEC motors. Its easy to upgrade a B16 an get parts for it since there are versions of that motor in the US. Yes SOHCs are fun an i have built one with ZC Pistons an i have a friend locally with one. but if you are a BEGINNER building an dumping $1000 in to a single cam to freshen it up an just put pistons in i wouldnt reccomend. You can spend a little more an get a B16 swap ($1300) an then throw it in the corner an but the mounts an linkage and find some buddies to help you put it in since its not a complicated swap. and he'll be more then happy since he'll have VTEC y0!
sorry for the rant, my .02
