Default Type R vs. B20 build

Plans are to build an engine for road race/autocross in an EG Hatch. I want to drive this to the track and back home. 190-200WHP would be nice. After looking at what a GSR or Type R motor will cost ($3200-4500) w/o any internal or bolt on mods, Would it be more cost effective and just as bad *** of a motor if i were to build a B20 block with a b16 or b18 head? I plan on fully building the motor, bored block, port/polished head etc. Either way, I may be into this $5k+. For what I want to do, would a built B20 Vtec be a better choice or a Type R? Thanks, and sorry for the noob questions. I just want to get it right.

Building a B20 to road race reliably cost a lot more than a used ITR power plant. Don't just look at power, look at the transmission too that you typically get with it at those prices.

Thanks for the input. In building a B20, what are you referencing to reliability? What kind of things would need to be done. I did notice that an LSD trans would run me 750-1000, deffinatly something to consider there.

Id go with the b20 bottom end personally. ~20 ft/lbs of torque pretty much everywhere over the smaller 1.8L. Could be better for pulling out of turns. And possibly reduce the need to downshift in some cases.

Only bad thing about the b20 (and this is also debatable) is the crack prone sleeve design. Im pretty sure you could build an engine that passes your goals with a $5k budget.

5k budget? shiiiiiit my build was a hair less than that and if I have an NA ITR keeping up with me I'll be pissed lol. BUT the if you can find a full ITR swap I'd say get it, run it, learn to drive on it and you can add more later.

what if u css the b20 block. seems like it will reduce cylinder flexing which is bad for the 1 piece design..

I think.on their website the list b20s as being guaranteed to 350whp or something like that. I'd Def do a css if I was building a b20 just for piece of mind.
