Default Toda B cam........broke in half...:-(

Cliffnotes:
Timing belt broke, took head apart, replaced valves, trq'd everything in proper sequence and too spec, then this happened:
When we started to put the cams back in. We had all cam caps and stuf trq'd properly and in the proper sequence. We went to turn the intake cam gear to TDC so we could start putting on the timing belt. We turned it about 45degrees and then........crack. The cam snapped in half. I have heard of skunk2's breaking in half, but not Toda. I know cams are not invinicible but w/ 25k on them I do not see a reaosn for it to break in half like it did. Luckily a friend of mine (Johnzm here on h-t), let me borrow his B16 cams. I decided to only install the intake cam, so right now I have a B16 intake cam and a Toda B exhaust cam. I probably should have installed BOTH b16 cams but decided to run 1/2 and 1/2. I then adjustd the vavles to proper specs and finished the other little **** to get her running. Cranked it up and it runs good so far.

Pics of broken Toda B intake cam w/ 25k:

Sucks. At least it didn't happen at 6,000 rpm+ and break more stuff.

this is absolutley devastating for me, mostly becasue it has made me loose faith in ANY aftermarket cam. the more i talk, listen, and hear about cam failures, rocker wear, and cam longevity, the more i wanna just run some OEM ITR's.

I agree. If this had happened after I had cranked it up I am sure the entire motor would be toast.

Thats not right. Toda should give you a new set. Crower has done it for a bunch of prelude owners when their cams snapped so i would expect the world famous 'Toda' to do the same. With that note, theres always a bad set of cams in the bunch no matter what the maker IMO and you had the worst of luck on getting a set.

what valve springs are you using? I know toda cams will snap if the valve springs are too stiff.

if my memory serves me correctly, i've only seen 3 of these "my cam broke" threads over the last year. is that enough for you to change your mind about aftermarket cams? nothing is perfect, but when the breakage factor is 2% or less, its pretty much inevitable. nothing is indestructable & no manufacturing process is flawless, so it seems about right to me. eventually a cam is going to break, whether its poor install or quality control. actually, some guy said that he broke his ITR cams a month or so ago, should we now stay with our oem SiR & GsR cams because of a few bad experiences? the good always outweighs the bad.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility that the cam was somehow damaged when the belt broke, since it sounds as if you had some valve damage as well.

I have had my B's in for over two years and they have over 60k on them. I have never had issue like this.

I wouldn't rule out that the damage may have occurred due to other breakage. I have seen timing belts break and destroy the head and broke the cam.

look into the head to see if anything else is broken

since he does not seem to be here, ill answer some questions for all the inquiring minds...

the PE belt broke on him FOR THE SECOND TIME a little bit ago. he also had one break like 10k ago. this time he towed it back to a shop so me and a few other friends couild take a look. i turned the cams just like he did back up to TDC. ended up this time he bent 2 exhaust valves. (he was at idle when the belt went) so i think on wen sday we replaced the 2 valves and i threw the head on. yesterday he installed the cams, and tq'd to 18 ft lb and when he turned it it broke
so now he is running my b16 intake cam and a toda b exhaust

I hear you however the question is "are aftermarket cams more prone to breaking then oem ctr/itr cams...?"
