H22A NO VTEC, opinions please, stumped

Default H22A NO VTEC, opinions please, stumped

Ok, here is the scenario:

Customer drops off an H22A JDM OBD1 swap for his 97 Honda Accord.

The head is pulled off the block, yet it is still assembled (valves and valvetrain still in the head)

He has Skunk2 Stage2 camshafts, valvesrpings/retainers, valves, intake manifold, and cam gears. I personally tear down and reaseemble the head.

I did the H23 tensioner conversion on the motor, i also installed a brand new timing belt and water pump OEM HONDA. I install the headgasket and bolt the head down. i do a valve adjustment. We complete the swap.

Ok car cranks up, runs, idles fine. we put it on the dyno.

CAR WILL NOT HIT VTEC. here is everything i have checked out:
ECU is fine, ECU is Uberdata chipped, The ecu will change ignition and fuel tables but the motor will not hit VTEC

VTEC solenoid has been swapped 3 times, solenoid is getting power, screen is clean.

0 PSI OIL PRESSURE IN THE HEAD. I pulled the valve cover and turned the motor over. oil is coming up to the head , going over the rails, and dripping down onto the camshafts. but i can get any PSI reading from my gauge.

I tested by the sending unit below the headgasket, and i was getting 45-55psi. so i changed the oil pump out. i know you need at LEAST 60psi to operate vtec. Pick up and Pan are fine and undented.

I am about to tear the head apart, all i can think of is that i must have missed something in the head that is sposed to be there when he brought it to me off the block. This is my first H series build so i relly dont know the difference between them an B series. There is NO OIL control orifice in the block (like a GSR has) and the little dowel pin in the head is present.

ANY IDEAS ANYONE?

Seriously though Mike, it seems if something is missing in the head maybe, maybe the VTEC pins fo rthe rickers man. Recheck that, are you now getting enough oil pressure at the head?

Edit:Dude I am used to Boost Fluid but yeah maybe you the JDM VTEC fluid man since the motor is JDM

i never took the rockers out and i never took the shafts out, so i ASSUME they are their, but im going to take them out in a min.

i just pulled the cam caps off and i see everything that is spoed to be there per the honda service manual

there is one way you can test to see if enough oil pressure going to the head. add the vtec line (non vtec- to vtec) hook it up just as you would the motor didn't have vtec once installed if vtec kicks in you know you dont have enough oil pressure going to the head. Thats just one way you can test

if your checking pressure at the head. you should have 7 psi or less. The jump the vtec selinoid it should jump to 57 psi

if the accord didnt have vtec, you might want to run a vtec wire..

it haad vtec and my wiring is correct.

i tested the plug that is AFTER the solenoid, i read 0 PSI, at 5500rpms, i read 0 PSI.

I jumpered the Solenoid at idle, and it clicked open , i clicked it at 5500RPMS, and still, NO VTEC

I know someone with an H22 that didnt get vtec for a while. We fixed it by putting oil in the motor. he was just low on oil.

If the head is not getting any oil pressure it is possible that an oil galley is clogged or plugged. Try to run an LS/VTEC style oil line from the oil pressure sensor bung and force feed to another galley plug in the head.

Also there are 2 little oil orifices in the head under a cam cap closest to the cam pullies (number 3 and 4) . They are not the same. It matters which one was put in which hole. I do not know if it will disable VTEC but if you have depleted all other possibilities it is worth looking into IMO.



Are you sure that # 10 is also installed? if not you will probably not get VTEC either. If your VTEC solenoid, wiring and those 3 orifices are there then there is NO reason you should not be hitting VTEC unless there is VTEC hardware missing.
