I agree. I've never found the need to use one of these devices. Never had belt slap.. But I also only use Toda and GReddy belts over the OEM and Gates "blue" belts.

if a tensioner can be design to apply pressure to the entire length of the front side, like K20 and F20, then yes. applying point-pressure via a roller to a long length of an oscillating belt is not fixing the problem

splitting the length of the flapping belt with a roller will increase the frequency of the flapping

hmm, not quite sure if i agree i mean, it looks to me having an additional tensioner does reduce slapping quite a bit and it makes logical sense that it should help. the frequency might increase but the distance/magnitude has been reduced. no?? the point is to reduce the chance of belt skipping right? so it should work as advertised...

It does, and belts can develop a 'slap' from high ramp angles, most people with big cams have the same slap as posted in the video. Also trying to get a properly sized timing belt on a motor that has been decked is near impossible.

i'm not quite sure the cam profile has huge effect on the belt slap... it seems more directly resulted from the belt tension itself, and the resonance itself from moving through various engine rpm's... i mean, i think if you film the belt slap with a stock cam, then you put in a huge cams with huge profile i don't think it should change the belt slap much if at all. also at idle and car not moving there's no VTEC/hi cam anyway...

has more to do with the loading and unloading of the belt tension by the crank acceleration and deceleration when the one steps on and off the throttle--road racing comes to mind

I had heard it was high ramp angles, not necessarily just big cams. I could be incorrect though.

Either way, I really like mine, it's worth the money for the peace of mind that I won't jump a tooth.

edit: here's the link to Larry's website... like I said, decking and high ramp cams.
