1997 CRV Oil Consumption
I recently purchased a 1997 CR-V with 210,000 miles for my daughter to take to college. It is using about 1 qt. of oil every 700-1000 miles but no oil under the car where she parks. It has a significant amount of smoke on cold start but not while running. From what I've read it sounds like valve seals and or guides although I'm not sure. My concern is that I put a remanufactured head in and it turns out not to be the issue. How can I determine if the guides/seals are in fact the issue. Also, is it best to go the remanufactured route or just replace guides and seals?

Re: 1997 CRV Oil Consumption
Thanks, Chris, I'll do a leak down test. If the result is valves (intake or exhaust) how does one know if it is the actual valves, guides or seals? Or does it not matter and you just replace them all or go with a remanufactured cylinder head at that point?

Re: 1997 CRV Oil Consumption
Because I'm a fan of trying the easiest fix first try using a high quality fuel system cleaner first such as Redline SI-1. My engine had an oil burning issue also though not as bad as yours. I had a feeling my oil control rings were gunked up because this issue persisted even though the valve seals were replaced when I did a cam and valve spring install. After a few bottles my car actually started to drive better and the oil consumption decreased quite a bit. If that doesn't work then it may be time to freshen up the head.
