Default clutch is bad 2004 TL

Well my clutch is starting to slip and I need to get a new one just asking what is the best option from some of you guys who have already changed it out? Also any tips on changing it would be greatly appriciated being this will be my first time opening it up. I have changed the clutch on a B-series but not sure what to expect with the TL.

Thank you

I hope you have a lift if you're going to do the job yourself. The subframe, steering rack, etc have to come out.

I will tell you what to expect. 100% failure. Not a job for an amateur.

It's not your typical clutch either. These things have a self adjusting pressure plate. I have no idea what special procedures it takes to set it up. If you do plan on doing it yourself, you better get the OEM shop manual for this specific generation...

correct every one . this is a duel mass flywheel and the clutch their is special tools to remove and install the clutch also the flywheel is not to be resurfaced. so figure about 600.00 for the flywheel plus the clutch parts. i just did a 05 today and very expensive plus you will need to buy the clutch tools. trust me you dont want to tackle this by your self.
you will need a hoist and a transmission jack engine cradle and the engine brace. save your self some money and take it to your acura dealer and have it done professionally.its about a 11.5 hour job. thats the time we charge.

The honda research team managed to adapt a Comptech flywheel & clutch setup from the earlier CL Type-S to their 04 TL endurance car. Of course from what I've read, they never really laid out what it took to make it work. And since they were some of the guys that actually designed the 04 TL, they surely knew what they were doing and had the tools to make it happen...

This car was hugely successfull on the race track. They later switched to the TL Type S after that came out...

Of course the Comptech CL Type-S flywheel/clutch combo is crazy expensive anyways...

All I have to say about this clutch that acura put in is that I am disapointed that they are moving away from the simplicety that was proven to work. Now they are acting like ford and putting $hit in it making it difficult. Ohh well I guess you have to pay to play but it seems kinda rediculous to move away from something that has worked for so many years. Ohh well I am going to have to start this project just as soon as I finish my supercharger setup in my gsr hatchback (I love love love how honda designed the civic/integra they are so simple and everything works so well, the simplicity is what drove the reliability. I am just unsure how reliable the 3g TL will be let all hope for the best.

its not a difficult task you just have to have the correct tools.the self adjusting clutch as been around since the early 90's in the NSX.the 2nd gen tl/cl has the self adjusting clutch also.just another way to add more reliable power and get it to the wheels.have you called the dealer or a clutch shop to see the cost of replacing it ?

Once you do it, take some pics and do a nice write up for us. It would be really cool to se a flywheel install on a 3G TL...

Don't do it yourself. Take it to the dealer. Look at it this way. If you screw it up, you're left holding the bag, and possibly dealing with much, much more expensive repair costs or even worse having to scrap the car. If the dealer screws it up, it's on them to fix it for their incompetence.

Honestly, it doesn't sound like too bad of a job. Just as long as you're prepared with all the tools you need. A lift would help significantly to drop the sub frame but it's not impossible to do without one. Just my 2 cents.

Good luck.

Thread brought back from the dead.

W/ a non adjusting clutch like from a Civic or a Integra Yes, Always resurface the flywheel.

But on these Adjusting clutch set up the flywheel dose not need to be resurfaced,

Have not heard of anyone resurfacing a dual mass flywheel. If you've got a bad one (hotspots), it's usually replacement time.

WOW BACK FROM THE DEAD FOR SURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The flywheel is NOT to be resurfaced. Also the clutch job was easier than all the sceptics made it sound. So glad I did it myself learned alot and had some fun!! Also kept a lil bit of money in my pocket.

Trying to awaken this thread from the dead!!!

Has anyone done the clutch change and does anyone know a video or thread that goes through changing the clutch??! Mine is about to go out and I'm good with my hands and have ample experience working on cars, I just need a little bit of information...something that has proven to be hard to do. Any help is welcomed minus telling me to go to a stealership...go away if that's all you have to offer 😂

Its not too terrible to be honest. I did one in an 05 TL went smooth. I have a lift though. Subframe does have to come out, which makes it the worst part of the job. Go into it slowly, plan everything out, take pictures etc.
