There were two recalls on that particular year model --

99-023 MAR 01 Recall - Lower Ball Joint Replacement
99-038 AUG 99 Recall - A/T Extension Shaft Sealing Bolt

Make sure that the vehicle has received both recalls.

Other things to look out for are --
Brakes, creaking noise while turning, rear wheel noise, etc.

Other than that, just watch for the usual stuff like evidence of accident(s), alignment, unusual wear/tear, check all fluids to make sure it's been properly taken care of, etc.

make sure both recalls have been performed. check rear transmission stopper mount for breakage or cracking. take a look at the a/c idler pulley and a/c clutch as well. be sure to check the differential fluid, level & color. test the operation of the master window switch also, very expensive to repair.

The tranny problems were only for the 99-01 TL's. The car was built in Japan, unlike the newer models. It's built like a rock.

Bwahahaha!!!

Sorry, but I find your statement hilarious.

Mine's an '03 TL-S, and the transmission is the only part that was built in Japan. The rest of the car assembled in Ohio. The only part of the car that was built in Japan is the one causing the most problems.

"Built in Japan" no longer automatically means highly reliable, or rock solid.
