My custom exhaust is on.
3" from the header back into a 3.5" muffler. Full stainless tig welded. it's beautiful.
There are 2 transitions in the exhaust, from 2.5" to 3", and 3" to 3.5". I bought pre-made transitions from burns stainless, and they worked beautifully.
2.5" collector outlet -> transition -> 3" This is the most beautiful part of the exhaust. My stainless borla header with the ceramic coating I had applied is holding up quite well. The transition fit perfectly, and the welds are oh so clean!
the first bend is also the lowest part of the exhaust. I may go back to have the shop try and raise it up a bit there if possible.
nice and straight. . .
yep, even the 3 bolt flanges are stainless.
who needs a tip when you've got a 3.5" outlet from your muffler?
it is LOUD. I will be buying a 2nd borla muffler to use as a resonator soon. I love the sound of it though, I just wish it had less drone. The borla sounds ******* rad at WOT. No buzzing, nice and smooth tone. When i'm cruising at 2500rpm, you can discern a rythmic 4 cylinder rumble from the exhaust drone. Once I get rid of the drone, i'll be so glad. After the dyno next weekend, i'll be going back to a more sane muffler setup.

That's a work of art, can't wait to see some dyno numbers. Since your low speed torque is nada I bet you spend a lotta time above 5000 RPM.

i'm also in the making of customizing my own cat-back system. type-s mid to a BC 3 muffler. it'll be a little louder. where and how much will i spend for this? i haven't canvased shops yet. no time. how do you like your setup? (performancewise)
good job BTW.

Well, going custom is never cheap. the muffler & transitions cost me about 220 bucks. I paid $315 to have the pipe made including all new flanges & hangers, so 535$ so far. Plus I will have him flange a catalytic so I can pass emissions as well as put on a 2nd round muffler to act as a resonator. so add another 300 or so to that figure. Stainless isn't cheap

looks good. i had a borla myself and when i sold that i was thinking about a custom exhaust or comptech. instead, i decided to use the stocker for the street (nice and quiet no bs from cops) and run open header at the track.

edit: i'm only gonna be using a 2.5 BCIII rear exhaust. so you think it'll still be loud? although i will not be using the mid pipe which produced much more noise.

yeah, it's a huge exhaust. I wanted to dyno this weekend, but a damn ice storm cockblocked my plans. I stayed at home all day today. maybe tomorrow.
here's a sound clip btw:

my idle is at 1000 b/c i have motor mount inserts. if i set it lower, it would sound even meaner.

I went to the dyno today to do some tuning. I'm still waiting for my dyno results to be emailed to me so I can't post them just yet.
here's pics of the dyno & exhaust.
the 2.5" -> 3" transition.
The exhaust has so few bends.
It's nearly straight as it goes over the rear sway bar.
A shot of my ceramic coated borla header. primaries are much longer than your average "shorty" header.
wideband o2 sensor bung.
This is the tightest spot on the exhaust. on the inside radius of that bend, it is basically touching the floorpan.
it drags a bit coming into the driveway at work.
It's not too bad though. good thing i'm not worried about keeping it pretty forever.
Yeah, you might say it hangs a bit low.
last but not least, a video of the car running on the dyno. :D
It sounds a bit off on the dyno, the mic pics out certain frequencies & highlights them. Either way, this is what a race trim exhaust will sound like on an ep3. The borla supposedly is one of the quietest race mufflers too.

fwiw, i ran a 2.5to 3" downpipe back on my miata, when i ran a turbo on it. i used a 4" diameter "bullet" muffler from the summit racing catalog on the midpipe and it quieted everything down nicely.
good luck! custom exhausts are better than bolt-ons ANY day.

Re: (kung fu grip)
turbo cars have it easy. turbos quiet down the engine so much. at the last local a friend in an RSX type-s with the greddy turbo kit said my car was louder than his, he has a 3" non resonated exhaust as well.
