*HOW TO* install skunk2 coilovers and koni yellows on your RSX *56K Beware*
Ok well this is my friends car, he got some 18s and it looked retarded so we lowered it. He purchased Koni Yello Shocks and Skunk2 Coilover package from MODACAR (i use H-T banners). Well here we go.
Tools Needed:
3/8 Drive Sockets:
10mm
12mm
14mm
17mm
19mm
22mm
3/8 Drive Ratchet
3/8 Drive 4 inch extension
Hammer
Grinder
Drill
Small Drill Bit
Flathead Screwdriver
Needlenose Pliers
Impact 1/2 drive
19mm impact socket
Wheel Lock Key (if u have these)
well u start off and ur rsx looks kinda like this
but we dont like this, so first (we used a lift) raise your car up and take the wheels off of it. should look like this when u have completed this step.
proceed to the front of the car and begin to unbolt everything holding the strut assembly off. i went in this order.
there are 2 19mm bolts with 22mm nuts. i held the 22mm nut with the 3/8 drive and used the impact to remove the 19mm bolt. Presto its out. next u will see 2 brake lines that are attached to the strut assembly.
use a 12mm socket and remove the big line. then use a 10mm socket and remove the smaller one.
next u see a steering ball joint, use the pliers and remove the cotter pin, then use a 19mm and unbolt it. all that is left holding this strut on is the 3 14mm nuts under the hood. so pop the hood (while having ur friend hold the strut) and unbolt those 3 14mm nuts. and then ur front strut is OUT.
now proceed to the rear of the car. and when u look u see this.
take this 17mm bolt out and the strut will POP down and rest on this little bracket. next go into the truck cause all that is holding this on is 2 14mm nuts.
take these nuts off and wiggle the rear shock assembly and itll pop right out.
next is where i forgot to take pics cause my hands got nasty.
take the upper strut caps off the struts using the impact. may seem like they arent coming but give it a second they will come.
now we will put the rears together. take your koni and hold it up, put the lower threaded section and perches on, then the spring, now using the cap u removed from your stock struts put it all back together. and reinstall into the car in reverse of how we took it out.
now the front struts are TRICKY. i took the top plate off the strut. clamped the rod into a Vise. and drilled a hole into the bottom of this strut. (why u ask? because acura made the front struts all 1 peice with the tie are for the ball joint for the steering rack.) so once u have a hole in it and it is drained take the strut to a bench grinder and at the part where the rod goes into the tube, grind a ring around this section. u will notice when u have done enough. now go back to the vise and clamp it down. beat the bottom assembly downwards with a hammer until the bottom seperates and u see the piston come out of the main tube.
now put your koni yellow into this section and put the coilovers on the same way u did the back. Now put the front strut back on in reverse of how u took it out and tighten everything up.
get ur setting around where u want them and put the wheels on and lower the car. we used 12 threads on the bottom in the rear and put the perch at about 1/2 up in the front. heres how it turned out.
one side note, the skunk2 coilovers have 2 different threaded sections and there is a reason make sure you use the wider one on the front. we didnt realize this and had to pull it apart and redo it all.
ANOTHER SIDE NOTE THAT I HAVE JUST RAN ACROSS. WHEN U ARE INSTALLING THE REAR STRUTS KONI SUPPLIES SPACERS FOR THE BOTTOM BOLT. USE THESE OR YOUR CAR WILL MAKE WICKED NOISES WHEN U TAKE TURNS. ALSO WHEN U PUT THE FRONT KONI STRUT INTO THE SLEEVE ASSEMBLY U MUST PUT THE SUPPLIED BOLT THROUGH THE BOTTOM OF THE SLEEVE AND SCREW IT INTO THE STRUT OR IT ALSO WILL MAKES NOISES. I DIDNT READ DIRECTIONS AND I FACED THACED THESES NOISES AND IT STUMPED ME. SO MY FRIEND PULLED OUT THE INSTRUCTIONS AND THERE IT WAS IN BOLD LETTERING. STUPID ME FOR THINKING THAT SINCE I HAD A FEW DC AND EG COILOVERS UNDER MY BELT I WAS ABLE TO DO THIS. *ALWAYS READ THE DIRECTIONS AND DONT RUSH*
