What it cost to build a WC Touring Integra Type R - Taz
I was going thru some old posts at the WC forum. The following was posted by Taz Harvey at the WC forum in 10-14-99 and thought it was interesting...
------------------
What it cost to build a WC Touring Integra Type R:
I’ve built plenty of racecars over the years, and the main cost is time, hassle, and testing! To truly develop a car you need 20 hours of on track time BEFORE you ever see a race. Most people skip this part and “wing it” at the track. Bad idea.
CAR $20,000 for a used 1998 Type R
Cage & Labor: $7000 done by a competent raceshop
Seat & Safety: $2000 parts for belts etc...
Shocks :$1000 to $5000 depending on what brand: You can go low budget with Bilsteins, or spring for Ohlins or Penskes, or Dynamic for $$$, plus you need a spring inventory and machining to solid mount the suspension pick-ups.
Engine $2500 in machine costs and parts
Wheels $3600: 12 $300 wheels
Tires $900: 1 set of BFG’s
Mugen Stuff $2000: Computer, motor mounts etc…
Misc stuff: $3000
Total $ 46,000 MAX
You can spend less if you find one that was a theft recovery with no interior, as that is tossed any way. If you add in a DATA system and other option you can spend more, but I think close $40,000 is about right for a car that can win in World Challenge.
Now something for those of you who want to see something besides an Acura, or BMW win: A Honda Civic shares a lot of the same parts as the Integra, and can be found for 5-6k as a shell. A Type R motor will bolt right in. In Japan the Type R Civic is faster on track than the Integra even though they are only 1600 cc engines. Go figure.
