Default Type R performance tips

Just got a used 98 Type R. Getting ready to put shocks and springs on the car. What about engine modifications - I ready about the different cold air intakes, headers, exhuast, cam gears, and so on. I know the header and the exhaust, but not sure about the intake (Comptech Ice Box is leading). Anything else to increase the HP?

None of those...

Performance brake pads (ex Panther Plus, a streetable/track pad that works great)
Performance brake fluid (ex ATE Supergold, Motul, etc)
HPDE schools (NASA, Speedtrial, Carguys, etc)

I already have some Hawk pads and Castrol SRF bFluid.
Thanks to John (J28S) I think I got it now, he gave me the lowdown. What's up with him wanting to trade engines? LOL

::: OT: Before you get flamed, you might want to change your picture. Some one already has it (RealTypeR):::

Please do not ruina a well-balanced car before you can extract 100% from it. Honda did a good job designing the suspension, why not just appreciate it? Plus you will have spare money for driving schools and beer

Thanks for the help guys. The thing is I probably have around 1,000 days (yes, 1 followed by 4 zeros) of high speed experience on race tracks driving open wheel race cars (Formula race cars). The Type R is extremely slow in comparison to my experience. As John (J28S) said, driving Virginia International Raceway Full Course doing a 1:53 isn't going to be even close to what the Type R will do in race trim which he said would be a 2:15 at best. No disrespect, I just want to have some fun and get some seat time before I back into the open wheel racing circuit.

yea. I guess you could say my helmet has a splitter and a spoiler. LOL

Wai: thanks for the reply! I got about $1500 - $2000 to play with. and all mechanic work is free, if my dad lets him. The suspension has already been decided (front and rear adjustable swaybar pending order, having a set of Penske shocks modified to fit the car, and John sold me some springs.

From what I saw from this board, a good fuel management system (Power FC, VAFC, Hondata) can give pretty good gains even with stock internals.

Well a VAFC isn't a standalone like the others, but you don't really need a standalone.. i'd run a standalone if you run some aftermarket cams though.. IMO talk to b18cxr about some toda cams and a power fc and tuning suggestions.. he's a smart guy who knows his ****.

Type Zero and b00st-Ownz: Thanks, that really helps. will look into the VAFC. John talked me into a JDM DC 4-1 header and special cat, and looking into another exhaust - no big exhaust tip, Plz. what's the best intake. I just found out what a H/I/E means (header, intake, exhaust). My dad's mechanic think he has found a Mugen ECU for a Type R. Does it matter what year it is? Thanks Sean

Wow how nice to have free mechanic work!

If that's the case, I would say go with something else like an ATS 4.929 final drive, lightweight flywheel, and "maybe" a thinner head gasket. All those parts are relatively cheap but installation cost is high if not done by yourself. That should make your car feels a bit closer to a real race car that you're accustomed to.
And as Type Zero and Dave mentioned, get a VAFC and do some tuning.

I know that Mattj (Dropspeed) is pushing almost 190whp with just bolt ons and lots of tuning. That's almost a 30-hp jump (Mattj: correct me if I'm wrong). So I would say there's quite a lot you can do before getting into the internals.

Honestly, I wouldn't run a mugen ecu without all the mugen stuff. Just run a stock ECU for now.. if you stick with stock cams get a FPR, VAFC, skunk2/endyn/toda gen 2 cam gears, the header you have, cat you have, any exhaust or get one made (I'm assuming your team has a welder).. I'd get one made myself personally unless you're into the bling bling which you don't seem to be. With good tuning you should be putting down some nice #s

Wai and b00st-0wnz: Thanks. That is exactly what I was looking for, can't thank you enough. Why are some of the people in the "competition" forum such panzies? I would think they were head of R&D for one of the top F1 teams the way they act. Do they all race or what? I will keep my distance from there. As far as the team welder, he's a big Brit *******. He acts like if he has to weld anything but aluminum it's going to mess up his hair or finger nails. Plus he complains that he is supposed to only work on the different team's racecars. And he freaks out if one of the drivers messes up the chassis where he has to weld another arm mount or something.

N/P, I'll keep offering advice until I'm banned from here for not sucking the man's *******

I never go there.. but most of them to my knowledge autox.. or do track events.. or solo I events.. and some ECHC (East Coast Honda Challenge).. some of them are cool, some of them seem to think they are the smartest people alive..

Probably still cheaper to get a system welded up yourself, if you were around here I'd weld one up but..

Guess I could go mow Robert's grass and some other landscaping in trade for making an exhaust system, and tell him how he is the best fabricator there is. Not a bad idea. Cool, I'm pumped now. Now I'm off to search the internet for the parts. Thanks again, you guys in the "Integra Type R" forum Rock.

#1 BEST mod for the ITR to make it go faster is REALLY learning how to drive...

Good luck,

A.

PS a set of new sticky tires is what you will need to buy before you start the learning process!

That is usually a pretty good stock answer in most cases, but did you read about his experience on the track? I think he has the driving part down...
