E30 M3 will hand an ITR its *** on track.
E36's are not expensive to fix, just the E30 M's

You really think so? How much do those things weigh anyway?

Re: (Rob :190:)
Seeing how old this thread is, I wonder what he actually ended up choosing.
As much as I love my car (E30 M3), I really have to give a bit of hesitation to any potential buyers who plan on making it thier only car. Parts are a bit difficult to source if something does go wrong in the middle of nowhere, vibrations have a way of jiggling out things you know worked a week earlier, and every noise from the car reminds you of how much rebuilds are. And honestly they are 'fast' (or even quick) in the stoplight to stoplight sense.
But once you manage to get it on the track most of those worries go away for a short time.
I'd give my nod to a well sorted out E36 M3 for daily driver/weekend tracking. Its faster, more reliable, and actually comfortable... and to be quite honest 75% of the time I use the girlfriends car (e36 m3) if I need to go anywhere just so I don't have to worry about the car (theft, wrecking it, feeling the need to check the oil every time I drive, etc).
You can now return to your normally scheduled ITR banter.

maybe,
but Honda Reliability is > BMW reliability...
and I don't care what anybody says, BMW parts are definitely alot more expensive and harder to find.. (got $25 brake rotorz from Autozone? I didn't think so.)
I love E30 M3's as well, but I just don't think it would cut it as a daily driver.

Re: (Philly_NBP_R)
Don't get me wrong. Honda reliability and ITR performance is great. But, ITR have two major faults which I dislike: loose steering feel & lack of RWD.
I wouldn't daily drive an E30 M3... so, what? Quite a few ITR's are weekend & garage queens anyway.
It's quite amazing that there isn't a "perfect" car no matter where you look. There always seem to be something faulty with a car. <sigh>

I agree 100%...
I think that removing the power steering assist in the ITR helps with the steering feel issue alot...

Re: Type-R or 1991 BMW E30 M3? What would YOU do? (Spedeeman)
This is an old post, but I thought I should chime in. I just got an itr. My previous car was 1989 M3. When the time came to replace it, I thought long and hard about getting another E30 M3. Ultimately, I decided on an itr b/c I needed the car to also provide relaiable daily transportation. My old M3 was fairly reliable, but like all older cars, something was always needing to be replaced.
As far as which car drives the best, it's hard for me to say. I've only had my itr about a week now, and I haven't quite figured it out yet. I'm not sure, but I think it corners, brakes, and steers better than the M3. The E30 M3 is a helluva good car though--lot's of raw character. Always very fun to drive. Forget an E36 M3. It doesn't have any personality compared to an E30 M3. In my experience, E30 M3's are very predictable, and corner with a hint of understeer. The trick is to make them flow through the corners. They're more about precision and less about grunt and power oversteer. The itr seems much the same actually. I miss my M3, but I'm really starting to like my itr. My initial estimate is that my new itr is a worthy replacement of my oldE30 M3.

For those of you looking at any M3s seriously, read an article in this months GM. Compares and rates all three versions the M3. Results were basically as follows.
E30 M3: Perfect for track duty, could be harsh for some to be a dily driver
E36 M3: Lost some of its track appeal to conform to mainstream production, but the ideal for a daily driver
E46 M3: Some understeer problems, too much luxury, least appealing on track

Re: (Doostur)
I'm a big fan of both the E30 M3 and the ITR. I compete against an E30 M3 in STX class auto-x and I cannot hang with him. However, he just blew his motor and he's looking at 9 grand for a stock rebuild. For that reason alone I would go with the ITR.

I love E30 M's. There is a red one by where I live and I drool everytime I see it. The only thing that keeps me away from them, which is the same issue with E36's, is the maintenance and reliability. Water pump, RTAB, oil nut, sub-frame, etc. all need a constant watch or you could be forking out $$$$.

Re: (P Nut)
My dad has an E30 M3 and drives it daily. He rarely has any problems with it but he normally fixes things right away and doesn't let it accumulate. So for reliability and driveability I give E30's a . But then again he's had that car since day 1 and knows whats been done with it. Buying an E30 or any older car is always hard because they're alot older and hard to find a good one that was well taken care of. However, I have heard the same thing with these cars that maintenance and repairs are expensive but from personal experience it's not very much more than fixing and maintaining any other car.

Can you elaborate on driving characteristics compared to a itr,
fit, feel , refinement...
