Default temp guage problem

My temp guage needle swings the wrong way when my car is started.

When you put the ingntion in the on position it drops down to the left until it bottoms out.

It works intermittantly, however most of the time it is just buried to the left.

anyone else have this problem or possibly a solution to this problem.

well i could take one, but i dont think it would help at all.

just picture the needle moving the wrong way when the key is in the on position.

i will go shoot a short video and a picture maybe it will help.

So it doesn't work when the car is fully warmed up?

nope, it just says buried

i took it to the dealer when it was under warranty and they made it work, but that lasted about a month

I dont feel like having them fix it again and i have no problem taking the cluster out. I just wanted to get an idea what the problem may be before i start incase i need a new guage. I would rather order that before i get into it.

Sounds like something is shorting out and/or a bad ground.
I'd try checking the voltage at the sender, and then correlating that with what you find at the gauge/cluster.

Any other electrical problems or electrical installs recently?

no other problems.

no other electrical installs

started the helms trouble shooting and it passed the test for the guage. I am getting ready to do the test for the sending unit.

OK just finished the checks for the guage and sending unit.

both seem to be OK

i am guessing its a loose wire in the cluster.

i guess this isnt a problem many other people have had.

Good thing you've got a Helms.
I was just looking through my 97 Electrical supplement ... good luck. Ed

well i pulled out the cluster (took about 4 minutes)

and turned the 3 screws on the back of the temp guage about 1/16 of a turn and now it works again

we will see how long this lasts.

thanks for the help though

does the car run cold for a while?? if so does the gauge only work when you let the car idle till full running temp?

if so then your thermostat is stuck open.... I had the same problem

no the guage would actually bury its self down on the cold side (look at the movie)

it doest run cold for a while it works perfectly except the guage. The guage would never come up out of the pinned cold position.

i cant explain it any other way, but the video shows you what was happening.

its fixed now. I just wanted to post what i did incase someone in the future had a similar problem. I see too many posts where the resolution is no where to be found becuase once the person figured it out they were done dealing with it.

I've got the *exact* same problem. Mine started when I pulled my tranny the first time intermittenly and after I pulled it the second time it has been permantly pegged to the left.

Thanks!
