Hello all,

I have a '00 PY ITR with a 1997 JDM Type R Swap. I bought the car as a theft recovery and am bringing her back to life. As we all know the JDM Type R VTEC solenoids do not have the oil pressure switch, well some do and others do not. My engine does not have the switch. I know that the tachometer and the vtec solenoid are grounded off of the same location. The tach is completely fine until the VTEC change over point and then it just drops to zero, powerless. There is no effect on the VTEC at all, only the tachometer. The car is running the OBD2a 1997 P73 with an OBD2B to OBD2A harness. I have tried several things with no success, even running a wire from each pin of the vtec oil pressure plug of the OBD2 GSR engine harness I am using to try and make sure it does not need the ground when VTEC engages. Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you have a ported 2.0 VTEC solenoid.

Trace the tach wires. Your answer probably lies in them. My tach acted up when I converted to OBDI from 2A. Don't remember atm, but I ran the lead for it from a pretty funky location.

Yeah, I need to check the tach wires for sure. What I am thinking, and this may be going out on a limb but, is that the JDM ITR ECU not having a signal to check the vtec oil pressure switch, and the OBDA harness actually having a wire going to where the USDM oil pressure switch would be, may cause some type of short only when VTEC is engaged. Basically, the ECU has no reference to send a signal to check for the VTEC oil pressure switch, but the wiring is there going to the ECU. And since the tach is perfect below VTEC, I think it is shorting out (losing a ground) when VTEC is engaged. Ehh....its killing me.

Wow... i'm have the same problem... when vtec engages the tach goes back to 0 then comes back up when out of vtec!!! Help us... please?

I'm willing to bet its a dizzy issue. Exact same thing happened to me. I borrowed a friends dizzy and switched out mine, good as new....

You didn't have to change the entire distributor. It's the ICM that causes this problem.

Mine does this also..wats the ICM in the dizzy?

Very interested in knowing also... I put that same dizzy in my 96 civic and it works fine, so i guess it has to do with the post 98 or 99 integras.

The icm is the ignitor...

im having the same problem i have a 97 spec R(jdm) motor in a 2001 R chasse with a 98 spec jdm feel's ecu when vtec hits the tach dies and i get no vtec wtf what dizzy do i need to get?

Try one from a 98 and up itr/gsr or 99-00 civic si... i bet that would solve the issue.

i am having this same issue my tach dies and will even jump back up after i switched to obd1 from obd2b i am running s300 i thought it had to do with the jdm Itr cluster you guys just swap out the igniter or get a new dizzy ?

I have a a 2000 Spec JDM Type R that I need to replace the solenoid on. Do i need to get one without the oil pressure swirch? I am not sure if mine has one. How can I tell?

Does anyone what the part number is for the solenoid i need and if i can get from Honda or if i will have to go to Acura? Thank you for your time and help.

haha I know your problem.. I might solve it. When It's morning ill take a picture. You need to ground 2 wires together.. It's weird I drove like that for 2 weeks until my friend figured it out. My car is a 2000 with 1997 jdm-R motor as well.
