Default Sisters Type-r stolen from Orlando area

Some of you guys might know my sister Jennifer Barton... Her car was taken from in front of our house in Orlando... She has had her vin number convered up since she has had the car and yet there was no glass on the ground... Keep your eyes out for anything suspicious turning up. It was a 97' Championship white type-r... Still on the stock white wheels...There were two advan stickers on the front fenders and there was front end damage from a recent hit and run... This car was stolen between 8p.m. and 4a.m. on sunday march 6th. Thanks... Jessica barton.

Very sad to hear. I would keep an eye out if I lived in Orlando.

I'm curious, why cover up the VIN? What kind of security does that provide?

I thought they couldn't cut a key without that 4 digit # they give you?

The dealers have a database that has the pin #'s listed with your VIN.

All you need is one scumbag on the inside and anyone can get a key cut.

Dealerships are supposed to request photo Id that coincides with the registration and VIN. At least that's how it was at my local dealership a fewyears ago when I had new keys cut.

O.K., I just called the Acura Dealership right now, I wanted to see how much it was going to cost to do this test. The first thing I asked,
Me: "How much to get a key made for a 2001 ITR?"
Dealership: "$40, but I would HAVE to HAVE at least one of the other keys to reprogram the new key.
Me: "What if I don't have any of the keys?"
Dealership: "You have to bring in the car, so we can reprogram the whole ignition system for a new set of keys"
Me: "I can't do that, don't have any of the keys?"
Dealership: "All we can do, if you have the VIN#, is make you a copy of the key, BUT IT WILL NOT START THE CAR, it only opens the doors, hatch, and glove box. Again, we have to have one of the original keys to reprogram the new key to start your car."

Well, I learned if someone has your VIN#, they can get a copy for $40. Now, I will have to test and see how easy it is to get a copy.

Did she have any kind of security system installed?

With all of the theft there aren't going to be many of these cars left in a couple years. What was the aggregate production run?

Unfortunately it looks like Hondas are too popular for their own good.

So for 40 bucks they get in your car (or free if they work at the dealer), no one notices and it takes all of 5 minutes to install a OBD-I Jumper Harness and different ECU and that is taken care of. I've seen so many ITR's stolen, but there is only so much you can do to prevent it. I suggest owners in the Orlando area plant a camera around their car for the time being or rent a garage, because this doesn't appear to be stopping anytime soon.

For $40 you can get a fully working key for a pre-2000 model year integra with just the VIN. I did it to prove the point a few years ago. Copied a VIN off a friends car, got the key made at the dealership, went to his place and moved the car. So sadly, at some dealerships you could just go read a VIN off a 97 R, say that you lost your only key and that you bought the car used, only got one key, and they'll make it for you without a problem. Most dealerships require proof of ownership now since Honda sent them a later discussing this problem. Even the one I had make a copy requires proof now.
