shopping for a helmet...
I'm about to embark on my first track event at Buttonwillow Raceway Park on the 3rd of November and am looking for a nice racing helmet. Does anyone have any suggestions on which brand(s) to get and which to stay away from? I'm vaguely familiar with the snell ratings. SA2000 is the latest right?
Maybe you can post which model helmet you have !!!
Thanks!!!

yes SA2000.
I have SA95
i bought mine at http://www.speedwaremotorsports.com/
it was an ARAI GP-3.
now the latest is the GP-5k. about $659... There are some other brands, but this is what I went with. I wanted JDM
-aoib0t, who is a JDM pen.

Re: shopping for a helmet... (AoiGSR)
i bought one from racers wholesale(model GF950 Full-Face (SA2000) due to mix up on my part(long story)
anyways. it was $240 , I could have got a Bell for $299.
If I ever got into anything other then HPDE, I would get something better.

After trying on a friends, I'm really liking the Simpson helmets.... don't remember the name though.... But when it's time for me to get a helmet, that's the one I'm getting.

I have the Simpson LX open face and I got it from Simpson World in Torrance. They are $239.00 plus tax. Its a great inexpensive helmet for a beginner!

You should be able to use an SA95 rated helmet until 2005. After that, I'm pretty sure they won't be any good anymore. Might as well get an SA2000..... it will meet requirements for a longer period of time so it is a better investment.

For the cost conscious, I got a G-Force open face SA2000 from Racer Wholesale for $160. Check the regulations, usually motorcycle helmets are ok for autox, but you need SA rated for track events...

Re: shopping for a helmet... (mugenmike)
Bieffe F1-GP...people always look at me funny becuase the helmet is aerodynamically designed...got it at a SA-95 closeout...in 5 years(when I bought it) I'll probably want another helmet, so I didn't worry about the SA-95 rating.
http://www.bieffeamerica.com for their helmets
Purchased through http://www.bellmotorsports.com/
Good information on helmet choices http://www.bellmotorsports.com/equiprec.htm
Also bought the helmet because...
Bieffe SA helmets use carbon fiber and kevlar composites for strength and weight reduction.
Can be used in:
SPRINT, FORMULA, OPEN CAR, DRAGSTERS, KARTS:
Any BELL ULTRA & PRO or Bieffe SA helmet may be used. Aerodynamic features are suggested to minimize lift and buffeting. (Fuelling II, Dominator, F1-GP) Karters may use Snell K rated helmets. Drag racers requiring a lifeline system should contact NHRA – rules are too vague for us to offer a system at this time.
SEDANS, PRODUCTION CARS: (any enclosed car with wind protection)
DIRT TRACK, OFF ROAD:
BELL XFM, Bieffe F1 or F1-GP are unvented lightweight composite helmets suitable for all forms of racing. (Sprint, Baja, tractor pull, etc.) Sprint drivers and other higher speed competition cars where the helmet is exposed to the air stream prefer the F1-GP for its aerodynamic features.

Snell rated "SA" (Sports Application) professional helmets provide extreme impact resistance and higher fire protection than Snell "M" (Motorcycle) rated helmets.

Re: shopping for a helmet... (kepani)
Find something that is SA2k and fits you well. Don't mail order unless you're really really certain. Wear sunglasses when you try out the helmet, if you wear them at the track. Your biggest option will be for a full or open face.

i bought a bell, works fine for me, nice comfort, good visibility, and snell approved. It was only $120 too, d8168055 shows a pic of the helmet a couple posts up.
