[Edit... wrong car]
"When I first got there, a yellow Lotus had already paid the pavement. More followed with a black Civic side-swiping the wall. Jerry Yea's yellow Type-R with the carbon-fiber hood was the final tragedy. His car rolled up against the hill and completely flipped him upside-down. Luckily he was not hurt and the car is more or less still in one piece."

Nice pics Steve. Yep, corner 5a/b at SIR needs to be respected big time. I didn't know what the fuss was all about until I did a track walk one day, and totally realized what everyone is talking about. The way you go up and take that fast left turn, the whole dynamics of the car are changing. Your best bet there is to never miss your braking point and take care of your downshift before you apex 5a. This appears to be a classic case of approaching the turn too fast, and then lifting, and that's the end result. BTW, despite that, 5a/b is my favorite corner at SIR.
Must have been 2 ITR's there with JDM front ends... The damaged one has factory calipers.
A032R's were the tire.

This was a really bad idea all around. Here is why:
No Instructors
Timed laps
Money was awarded to the fastest drivers
People with little or no track experience in a competition environment
Most of the "respected" marque and automobile clubs in the area were wary of this event, looks like their fears were not unfounded. In addition to these wrecks, a Civic even went off track under a yellow flag.
SIR is not a track to **** with, it will bite you back as we've seen. The truly sad part is that in a competitive and timed event most insurance companies won't pay out which means that Elise owner is making payments on a pile of plastic and metal.
