OT: Tested my exhaust today...
2.5" custom exhaust. magnaflow 4" x 18" muffler for a resonator & some ricey canister I bought at Hot Import Daze for $100. (Max Speed is the brand )
Anyways, under hard acceleration, the car registered a MAX of 100 decibles. Just free revving while parked, it doesnt even reach 90 decibles. This is all done from inside the car, BTW. Its one loud ***** ****** exhaust! Thank goodness for the butt-plug silencer...
Well, I have a sound meter so if anyone wants to do a "great exhaust noise level test", I can arrange that with the help of many cars with a wide variety of exhausts, a place where we can rev the crap out of our cars without getting thrown in jail, and me with my meter. Or if anyone just wants to know how loud their car is, let me know and we'll try to arrange something.

you should measure how loud it is with no exhaust.

I would measure them all from a standard distance from outside the car. The absolute decibel ratings would be nice, but comparable decible ratings would be hugely valuabe... for example: "The Spoon N1 is twice as loud as the Comptech but the Type One N1 is the loudest of them all"
How can we set something like this up?

That is a great idea actually and something that would be extremely useful to everybody here (everybody is asking about the sound/noise of exhausts).

I can measure it according to the laws speculations... and i am thinkin idle, max, and from inside the car also. With the numbers, we can say, "stock is this loud, but Spoon N1 is this much louder."
Like i said, i need to get a bunch of cars with lots of different exhausts. (even stock) I dont even need it all at once, but it'd be faster that way. My car meet is still a while away, but if people wanna meet for lunch or something, we can get this started.

yah, i'll be sure to get the list of engine mods too... with my car, the supercharger makes it a bit louder... but it will help to give people a good idea of the exhaust regardless. im just too lazy right now to get sponsors and everything, and with school approaching soon... i dont feel like doing too much.

I also have a db meter that I could use, so if some one on the east coast has an exhaust that the west does'nt I could give specs.............

It's like 76 or 86 (one of them) in BC........... I wouldn't be surpised if its the same in Cali......

Re: OT: Tested my exhaust today... (mugenracer)
I have an AEM in my GSR (Energy Suspension motor mounts and some delrin bushings also add to transmitted noise), bouncing of the rev limiter in 1st I hit 99db. If I remember right I sit at 76db or 77db cruinsing at 80 on the hwy.

that seems very low, JASMA approved exhausts all have to be below 98db.

California Law requires it to be 95 dB or less on cars. This is to be measure 5 ft behind the car, testing instrument pointed at the exhaust, standing sideways so that it does not cause an echo of your body, and making sure there isnt a building nearby for the same reason. The car is then revved to 5000 rpm.
Now ask any cop and they probably wont have a clue, but this is the meathod described in the CA Vehicle Code.
And yes Chris, I will use your car for a stock measurement... but you need to get yo *** back to cali first!

We did this at an NC dyno day back last fall. Don't have all the numbers in front of me, but Jason F's old setup put out about 116 dB, at exhaust level 20ft behind the car.
Inside my Type R, full throttle in third gear registered 88 dB.
Highest we saw was a hatchcrap with test pipe - 118.x dB!
