Default Is this normal?

yesterday i put on some mugen replica headers, and a high flow cat with the 3" flange, and the headers i put on i WRAPPED them, i was wondering if thats safe?, also when i drove it around for the first time with the headers in smoke started to come out, i was wondering if thats normal? is the header donut just breaking in? and causing smoke, or is the wrapping around the header?

what did you wrap them with?

if you wrapped it with saran wrap, thats bad.

if you wrapped it with exhaust manifold wrap (it should have a burlap texture to it) then it will be ok.

if it was the first time you started your car you are gonna smell nasty stuff when it starts up. thats the smell of the oils from your hands during install. it will go away. if you are getting actual smoke that is visible you got problems. the donut should not smoke, nor should the header. if you wrapped it with old tshirts then yes it could very well be the wrap.

lastly whats a mugen replica header

what to you mean "wrapped"? there may be some very light smoke after installing headers but it should go away after a short time.

then yeah you should be straight.

if there is visible smoke that's bad. check that everything is torqued down, look for leaks....

Wrapping your header will cook your cat.

is this true? what about jet-hot (or similar) coatings on a header?

the theory is that the header wrap holds the heat in (thus lowering underhood temps) and exhaust gases retain more heat than is good for it... and when it passes through an oem or hi flow cat, it will cook it because the temps are too high. it makes sense in theory but i havent seen concrete proof yet.

did that thermal coating you put on require you to apply water to expose the bonding chemical (kinda like decals)? i used something like that once as a temp. fix on my old car and it smoked like crazy just from the chemical/water evaporating...

and yes i would like to hear an explanation about the "cooking the cat" thing...

here is a brief discription of it "HI-HEAT COATING

To finish off a clean and well-protected Exhaust Insulating Wrap application it is recommended to use the Hi-Heat Coating.

The coating will protect the wrap from abrasion and harmful liquid spills. Extra resins and binders toughen the surface, extend the life of wrap by protecting it from friction, and seal the pores to minimize the penetration of harmful liquids.

The coating also works excellent as a paint directy on metal surfaces."

I wrapped the headers about 6 months ago, and used the coat then i didnt put the coat on yesterday...

why are u worried about wrapping it in the first place? for daily street driving, who gives a f0ck. i thought that stuff was only supposed to be used for competition and such. i say just remove it and leave it at that. if you compete then maybe put that stuff on for competition.

That's probably why your car is blowing out some black stuff that looks like smoke. It may start to discolor your bumper a little. No biggie.

Edit: Try some Jdm 4-2-1 Repelica headers.. you may like thoses a little better than the mugen ones

Where are all the headers going?
I only have room for one header.
