You need a digital volt /ohm meter ( DVOM ) to test your charging system... the light is indicating insufficient charge from your alternator..
If you don't have one then take the car to a garage to have them check it..
Shouldn't cost more than about 15 bucks for the check, and that will tell you what you need to replace...
If you have a DVOM then put it on your battery and start your car.. Voltage should be about 13.5 to 14.5. Turn on your lights, radio, wipers etc to put a load on the system.. Voltage should be still within that range.. Any higher or lower the alternator is suspect.. make sure the belt is tight... anything in that range then the battery is suspect.. Clean the terminals well and try using the car again to see if the battery charges.. Make sure the water level is up..
DON'T ADD ACID! Could cause an explosive reaction in an old battery. With the car turned off the battery should normally read about 12.8 to 13.5 volts.. Have someone hit the starter and watch where the battery voltage drops to.. anything below 12 volts means the battery is again suspect..
Hope this helps.. this is just general info..
You know I wouldn't have to edit this so much if I could bloody spell
