I would go easy on that soot with the fine hand polish unless you like mad scratches. You need to get the paint clean before you can polish it.

I broke out the Formula 2001 Wax/cleaner and it took it right out...FYI

This is exactly what I use...it will easily remove all of the residue from your exhaust...just keep a coat of wax on the car after you clay it and it will make it easier to clay all the successive times afterwards.

try mothers mag aluminum polish, takes alot of scuff marks and chit off my car without damaging the paint.

damn those are some crazy *** pictures!! but yea, i'm pretty sure that a couple thin coats of wax will help make it easier to remove later.
