Default ITR Problem Need help!

I VTECed to pass a slow car on the free way yesterday (7600 rpm), and by the time I got to the exit my car started to sound like a hot rod and struggle, and as I press on the gas to drive, my car starts to sound like a subaru. I asked one of my friends to pin point the problem, and he guesses that the car is running on 3 cylinders. Does anyone have any other ideas what the problem might be?

Kind Regards,

Brian

Check your plugs see what they look like. Do a compression test so you know you didn't lose anything important when vtec kicked in yo! If your plugs look fine and it has good even compression across the board then look to the plugs wires and distributor.

That was my thought but I didn't really want to say something that narrow. Glad my thinking was correct.

agree with your friend. it's running on 3 cylinders. shattered exhaust valves from excessive oil burning are the #1 cause of this

Yea, I had my friend stop by and check it out. the plugs are working and there is gas being put out, and still the same problem. What did you guys end up doing? Engine rebuild?

btw BlueIntegraBoy, do you still do the rear strut bar covers?

Kind Regards,

Brian

I'll chime in DEC BlueIntegraBoy

First I need to get the car towed to my friends shop, but they're saying its gonna cost about $750 to take out the engine and disassembling it. On top of that, since cylinder 4 is out, and the spark plug tip is broken they're thinking that the cylinder wall is damaged. So the motor is blown, and recommend me to get a new type-r engine thats gonna run be about $4,000. How much does an engine rebuild cost? I'm willing to spend about $2,500. Please help!

Kind Regards,
Brian

If you are mechanically inclined you can diy it, but if you have never even taken a head off of a motor, I wouldnt even try to mess with it yourself. The best way to see whats f***ed up is to use a bore scope. If its a good one not only will you be able to tell if the cylinder wall was damaged, it will also turn up so you can look at the valves.

i bent all 8 exhaust valves on my gsr. just take off the head and do a leak test to see what valves are bent. the hardest part for me was making sure i set the timing up correct, didnt want to do another rebuild lol also if you are doing it yourself make sure you know all the things like torching down the head, etc. talk to your friends, reasearch online and you might just be able to get away with a couple hundred bucks in parts.

I'm currently in school right now, and don't have time to rebuild my own engine. I'm planning to drop it off at a honda specialist. How much are the going rates for engine rebuilds for a b18c5 motor? (so i don't get ripped off) I'm planning to use Hondapartsunlimited.com for parts, unless someone can direct me to a cheaper place.

Thanks for the info so far guys!

Brian

you'll spend more than you would if you sell that engine as is and just buy a jdm itr engine for $2500. without you doing the labor it's going to cost you more than 1500 for a toatal rebuild

So was the cylinder wall damaged? A piece that small could have been blown out the exhaust before it was able to damage.
