Check out where I live man... I need a tire for wet and dry..
lotus - I was basing my answers on the original poster's location (Toronto). You, sir, can search any of my old posts and see what my opinion is on good wet/dry compromise tire is. But, remember what you asked... you asked for autoX tire and I assume that means in dry weather.

For the reading-challenged, I shall present the graphical version.

Sorry Cosworth... the was uncalled for...

Guy's out here run wet or dry, cause you'd miss half the races if you waited for good weather, so if you're on a budget... one set of tires... the good thing is that they take forever to wear out in the rain...

When Ross Bently was racing Indy cars out here I took a rain driving course with him... I actually don't mind the rain, and it's a blast to autox in, especially watching other people... yahooo...

P.S. why do you call yourself Cosworth? Cossie was my first " handle "

OK

I didn't think this post will get so much reply.... everyone is fighting in here.

basically it's just a simple calculation.

here: say a 195/55/15 tire

(195*.55*2)/25.4)+15 = 23.44"

.55 is a tire aspect ratio
2 is the two sides
25.4 is conversion factor mm to inches
15 is the diameter of wheel

simple right?

of course you can use the easy html calculator

or you can make a spreadsheet yourself to do all the calculation you want. Putting an input of your tire sizes and output the diameter of the tire.

As for advantages and disadvantages...

generally the lower ratio of sidewall the lower the load rating of the tire.
I wouldn't get anything lower than 90 mm of side wall.

Changing your final ratio with tires or gears, do not mean you'll be faster in a autocross course or track. If you change your ratio where the power band is not useful in an autocross then you'll lose time. As for my ITR, typically on 2nd gear I range from 3500 rpm to 6000 rpm... and on the straights upto 8000 rpm. For me I can still use more gears to bump my rpm up.... but would I want something unstable when I'm cornering... my vtec starts at 5700 rpm... I don't want vtec to engage while cornering right.... stuff like this... You have to compensate your ratio to the track you are driving.

changing the diameter of your tires do not change the class. CACC solo II rules can allow 1 point for stock class... and changing different wheels like offset and width is 1 point. Therefore you basically can change to anykind of wheels and tires, but don't go so wide that it's bulging out of the sidewalls. This will make you into SP class....

anyways... hope any of this can help someone out there....

Lotus - it's all good. I did live in Seattle for 10+ years and driven 5+ there, so I know what it's like... however, never autox-ed in the PacNW. Where I am now, I don't think there was any event with slick surface this year.

Cosworth = One of my favorite european cars from the early 90's... Ford Cosworth RS. That car had some serious power when modded... not to mention a distinct spoiler.

funny this is a topic not alot of people touch upon.
for different tracks I run different size tires.
the short twisty tracks I run smaller sizes for out of the corner acceleration and not worrying about top speed as much and vice versa.
however this season I plan on trying that setup of staggered tires, wider front narrower rear to see its effect on rotation through the turns.
Hopefully I wont go as far as crashing because of it.
Im also trying a new set of S compound Dunlops DJ01
i hope to hell they are better than AO32s...not that the 32s are bad though
