Any blatant visual clues to see if the cam gears/cam timing is off? I'm a self-professed noob at this stuff.

Well if you have stock camgears / camshafts, when the #1 piston is at TDC (white line on the crank pulley align with the pointer on the lower plastic cover) the mark on each camgears should be aligned with each other in between the camgears.
If you have adjustable camgears, everything should be aligned the same as above but even if you are set at 0-0 on the camgears that doesn't mean that the camshafts (and timing)are properly set (manufacturer error...) so you should always check the ignition timing with a timing light and camshaft timing on the dyno.
If you have a thinner head gasket or a milled head, then the markings won't line up, no matter how much you try.
