Default front splitters and undertray

Other than the Mugen front air dam for JDM conversion fronts, has anyone made a splitter and front undertray for a USDM front end to get more front downforce and cleaner air flow under the car?

I am working on a complete underbody tray for my car.
I am still working out the details around the suspension.

I don't even run my underbody tray anymore, but then again, mine is a track car. That crap just gets in the way when I need to work on it.

Now a front splitter would be nice. Something like Realtime, or are you looking at the horizontal type splitter?

arc makes a sort of universal side splitters that might work. i saw them at a&j, but i don't know much about them.

probably a stupid question with a stupid answer i need to ask this... why do u guys pull your undertrays out of your racecars? won't this cause turbulence underneath the car? i mean, ours isn't as elaborate as porsche or ferrari, but i don't see them taking theirs off...

Sounds like you need header wrap....

Phat R - who is going to treat his new Spoon header with ugly header wrap. Hardcore all the way baby

Ah yes aerodynamic aids...clean up that air flow to get downforce and stability.

I'd link the pic of the Realtime undertray at their Flash 5 site but this is the problem with Flash.

Here's a nice pic of the NSX undertray vs stock

stock

JGTC NSX

front

rear

Here's the Mugen undertray kit

A splitter like the one seen on the Audi S4 would be nice where the amount of downforce wanted is adjustable with the wires ..hard to see but this is Zing for your ....(this pic will go down on July2 with Zing.com's closing)

all that dirty air going underneath the car must contribute to frontal lift and therefore instability when you hit speeds over 100 mph.

it doesn't have to be fancy. Roger Foo used a wooden plank cut in the same shape as you see on the RealTime website under his civic when his original undertray was cracked by an off during qualifying.

Aluminum is one material.. great for weight...any other suggestions for materials? I'm thinking like a canvas material (like on sails) but a little more rigid which then pulled taught with snaps so you can remove the undertray when working on the car...

That ARC undertray, MikeIPS can you see what it looks like in your catalogue and post it (and the price) please? Bet you it costs more than a front air dam.

the other aerodynamic consideration for me is an adjustable HPM wing.(no drag for the drag races and downforce for Solo1)

cheers

Besides the ARC that Ben mentioned, you could consider something like the CRUX Flugel Plate (wouldn't want to go over speed bumps with that though).

There was a Japanese company called Adelaide that had some kind of kit for the the DC2 that incorporated a rear diffuser; I'll see if I can locate the ad (it's in either RevSpeed or Option2).

For the rear wing, check out the GT-Wing by C-West.

The Flugel Plate is carbon fibre, as is the GT Wing from C-West.

The C-West & Adelaide rear sections are fiberglass if I remember correctly.

If you're hany with fiberglass, I'm sure you can make some fiberglass plates, basically sheets and fabricate them to spec. Using hinges and support allows for adjustability. Had it not been for the nasty smell and slippery feel of acetone, I'd be making a lot of things out of fiberglass. It's so cheap and easy.

Delaney,

In regards to materials to use. After exchanging a few emails with Taz, he recommended against using the plywood, as both he and Foo have used before. This is due to sub-frame damage that has occured as a result of the plywood undertray being too stiff, and not tearing away during off-track incidents.

I have been researching splitters, and plan on making one similar to the Realtime version out of fiberglass. If you would like to chat about this in private, shoot me an email at asites@verant.com

Also, there is a company called FasPac Racing here in California that does carbon fiber work, as well as supplies the Mazda World Challenge Touring Cars with their front splitters. I, as well as Gansan (Glen K.) have been petitioning them to make one for the R. I believe that they would be willing to make one, once they get an idea of how many people would be willing to purchase it. So go to http://www.faspacracing.com and give them a call to inquire about it.

Benen may be working on a carbon front splitter in the near future. Drop them an email.

Jon7,

If the Type R splitter that Benen is making is anything like the Civic "lip", then it will do us no good.
