Factory Paint Process
Anybody got any clue as to what Honda used back in the day?
Interested to know what they used underneath on the chasis as underseal/tough paint coating.
Long shot I know.

Re: Factory Paint Process
Manufacturers have been E-coating the bodies and parts for a long time as a base, prior to paint. Galvanizing was probably also popular around 97-01. I think a lot of places did zinc base, E-coat base, then primer, then topcoat, then clear.
Immersion coatings are popular at the OEM stage. But you can't replace the E-coat on a chassis unless you strip it and acid bathe it, phosphate bathe it, etc etc etc, then immerse it and re-bake it.
On removable metal parts, re-applying the E coat would be costly, but fairly simple.
As far as the undercoat, I'm assuming just some sort of rubberized spray. I doubt you'll be able to find an actual manufacturer spec on the coating (PPG PN 1234567, for example), but I'm sure if you sourced a good quality drum of undercoating, it would be similar. You'd need to buy a spray gun that's meant to apply it as well as whatever thinners, etc are needed.
Try asking a reputable autobody shop what they would use as a replacement underseal.

You could try using a bunch of these cans lol. I use this at times to cover things up.

Re: Factory Paint Process
The 3M undercoat works really well. But...its not quite as robust as stock. Or the stock stuff was just laid down over clean paint/primer so it works better. Not sure.
I use the 3M stuff on my DD. I do the fender lips, spindles, etc with an epoxy base and 3M undercoat top and clear over it.
Idk how much of it you can see...but the chassis is extremely clean for a IL driven car.
