I'm guessing the Miata threw a rod or the motor locked up. Your guess is as good as mine. The bits flying at my car were internal engine parts, or part of the block that got punched out. Free crankcase breather...

re: exhaust. It's a race car I have an SMS header which goes to a very short 3' exhaust w/ resonator. It dumps at the end of the main tunnel, and faces down. It's the best way to pass sound. Can't (not won't) drive the car without earplugs and a helmet.

Nice lap Warren!! You have a JDM final drive...or are you hitting 5th on the US FD?! Those East Coast tracks have LOOOOONG straights!

 

US final drive. The backstraight is almost 1/2 mile long and the front straight had a fairly high speed entry. I have no idea how fast I'm going at the end of the 2 straights. Somewhere deep into 5th is about all I know.

P.S. Isn't redline in 4th about 120-125mph? You were probably going faster than 120...

 

4th = 120mph when on the rev limiter...

I usually shift at ~8,300/8,400 (indicated) while on track.

If I am pushing it...
back = 5th at ~125
front = 5th at ~130

indicated #'s in all cases.

I'm pretty sure it's faster than that. I'll smack the rev limiter in 4th before pit out if I don't shift. My tires are slightly shorter than stock though (205/50-15), I think, so I should be around 118 actual when I grab 5th.

I'm lucky to hit 120 on the back straight with my maybe 150hp @ the crank in my GT4 Civic.

 

Naw, that wasn't r2x. She was the next car to come through that mess though, I think. I have no idea where any of the cars behind me could have gone, because the track was covered with oil and metal bits from left all the way to the right, almost right on the normal line. I chose to go lawnmowing, and since I've been doing it as a kid I'm quite good at it

As for why I didn't bother to go chat w/ miata guy? I dunno. Kinda normal to see one or two incidents a weekend I suppose. I've seen worse happen in front of me or around me. I did find a friend of his, and I sent him the URL. It should get back to the owner.

No, this kind of thing isn't normal though. People don't normally scatter **** all over you, other than maybe a few pebbles or some tire marbles. If you're worried, put on a bra or some of the clear tape stuff from OG Racing, which is made of the same stuff that the clear bras are made out of.
