Default Engine Mounts

What's the advantage of replacing the engine mounts?
(reducing wheel hop only??)
will this vibrates the car even more?

how hard is it to install?

I am thinking about getting mugen bushings, but seeing that the engine mounts cost $399 from kings.. so I wonder what's really the advantage....

mugen motor mounts? do they even make them?? i'm running the porthane engine mount inserts for a da6, they run about 35 bucks for the set (3 pairs of mount inserts). dunno about spending 399 on mugen ones if they do make them. they should reduce wheel hop and the motor won't torque back and forth at all. therefore there should be more power going to the wheels. but the car will vibrate like crazy, i got used to it though. in terms of installing them it wasn't that bad...except for the rear tranny mount....

I have the Mugen mounts. They are great. Looks 100% stock, and they perform great. To be quite honest, the two lower torque positions seem identical to stock, even in hardness of the rubber. The main differences are the upper transmission mount and the rear mount. Those things are mega stiff. So stiff that I thought the car would vibrate at idle. But I was wrong. As long as the idle is above 1000rpm, the car is 100% stock feeling. But if the idle dips to like 700-800(on a hot, humid day for example).. you get a little vibration. Not NEARLY as bad as the Energy Suspension vibration you get from their rear mount insert... but enough to annoy some people.

Kinda pricey for someone who already has a motor in their car, but if you *** up the price of all the OEM mounts(for someone doing a hybrid and doesnt have any mounts) the price is very reasonable.

My friend Mike w/ the 97 EK Civic(JUN3 car in the camshaft test).. he is about to install a set of the Spoon mounts. I'll keep you guys posted on how they are.

I would start with just the inserts. I have the Mugen mounts and the inserts. I picked up the Mugen mounts since my ower mount was trashed. You will probably find that using the two lower mount inserts will work well. They should reduce hopping significantly without causing much vibration. I would give that a try, if you are looking for more then put in the rear insert or go with full mounts.

D has the Energy Suspension inserts in his, and they were a COMPLETE PAIN IN THE *** to install...you gotta lift the engine outta the bay a little bit, the first one goes in easy...the second isn't that hard...and then you get to the one near the firewall....and it sucks. the first side took us about 20 minutes of fighting like badgers against it....mr. mountainclimber couldn't get it, somehow i managed to focus all the power in my soul into my fingers and it went in, but my fingers just about fell off from the exertion. The other side was just as hard, but we had a slightly better angle at it, and a screwdriver helped us pry it into place. I'm not the work is worth the advantages for you at this point, the car will vibrate more, and you're not doing many drag launches anyway. I'd say upgrade your brake pads and fluid, and then we'll get you to a track. After that, you'll have a better idea of what you want to play with.

The install shouldn't be that hard.

You just need to loosen the upper mounts so the engine drops. Once there is enough drop you can easily slide of the lower side mounts and put the inserts in. Then just slide the mounts back on and tighten up mounts.

I have had a lot of experience with mounts since I originally had inserts and then went to the Mugen mounts along with the inserts. Also lowered the engine twice for the AC belt install and removal.

Also I would also recommend getting a bigger washer if you wil be using the inserts. They come with zip ties to hold them in place, but they have a tendency to give way especially on the driver side lower mount. If you get an oversized fender washer that should be a good backing plate to hold the insert firmly in place.

Hrm....LOWERING the engine....if i recall correctly, we were undoing the mounts and jacking it up, which wasn't cutting the mustard as far as "easy" was concerned. i'm going to have to kill D if that's the case

i have the spoon motor mounts. they are nice. You get better throttle response. and theoretically you get more power to the wheels.
whatever justifies it for you. I dont' know how much i got mine for though. Got them through AJ racing. Every single mount is stiffer than OEM. Still give me stock feeling.

Kind of a related question here....

How do you know when your factory motor mount(s) are worn and need replaced?

Hyper165: very good advice. A while back my driver's side inner insert broke free of the zip ties and got chewed up by my a/c pulley. ES sent me a replacement insert, and I asked them to send me a metal washer to keep the insert from floating out of the mount. I'll be installing the washer this weekend.
