Default The Drivers Edge - Texas Motorspeedway August 9th - Roval - night time

I had the opportunity to run Texas Motorspeedway Roval this past August 9th. It is a once a year opportunity to do it, so I did. I had fun. Driving at night time is almost the same except you really have to use reference points on where to turn in. I think I did well. The suspension felt a tad soft.

Video: 314MB @ 10 minutes video length http://www.texas-racing.com/Jared/TDETMS8908.wmv - RIGHT CLICK SAVE AS

Highlights:

a) my lap times were 1:46s (for reference purposes), well modified C6 Z06 with hoosiers, 1:43s - considering there are ginormous straights and they do this track more often than I
b) mildly modified C6 Z06 and I were putting down similiar times
c) Hawk Blue's were really eating up my front rotors, got to see them glow!
d) fighting the G forces as you are going around the bank. You really have to put a death grip on the wheel, otherwise, you are going straight for an upper wall. (new found respect for NASCAR drivers although I still do not like it)

Downs:

a) broke the same axle as I did at Expo 8 - VIR - caused a huge vibration around T2 and T9, some of you may notice I was not driving as competitive in the last night session (not that it matters anyway since it was an HPDE)
b) did not have an instructor, although my lines were okay (I thought), maybe I could have more improved lines.

The Track

That's so awesome, Mike. I'm so envious. You need to figure out this axle problem. It really has been putting a damper on your last couple events.
Glowing brake rotors and a chance to run on the same ground as the Big boy's FTW!!!

LOL. Yeah, the event attracted alot of Z06, Porsche, Vipers, M3's, a new STI, a few mini's and other random import cars.

It seems like the Z06 is the new entry level race car for many. I am seeing them all over the place where I am at too. There was 4 of them on track with me the other day out only 12 cars total.

I've driven Charlotte Motor Speedway 3 different times at night and enjoyed it everytime!

Nothing else like it.

Event was alot of fun.

I wish the infield portion was lighted...I would have loved to get some decent shots. The front straight is really the only place they will let you go to get pictures.

Corvettes are pretty much the perfect track car now. They are decently priced for a used C5 or even a new C6. Of course, there's always the RX7 with an LS swap There was one run group that was full of Corvettes, and only a few other makes.

Hopefully next year I'll be able to actually be on track instead of behind the pit wall.

I'm surprised they actually let the S2K run with no roll bar, especially at this track.

Looks like a blast Mike, sorry about the axle issue. I tip my hat to you sir, that would be an intimidating crowd to run with. Impressive.

Looks like a great time. I thought i'd give a reference to what our Indycar drivers experience running the TMS oval.

A qualifying lap time (stickers and light downforce) they will average around 214.5mph which is around 24.4 second laps. They will be 100% throttle all the way around the oval and be experiencing between 3 and 5 lateral G's in the turns. Front straight max speeds are around 220mph and the minimum speed on track is 212mph. Also, their steering torque (steering effort) vairies between -7lb-tq and 30lb-tq.
