Do I have a real type R?

Re: Do I have a real type R?
only early obd1 gsrs had the oil cooler fitting. by 96 it was gone. all itr and gsr block from jdm world are b18c. if the head is stamped 96 it's a 96-97 spec engine. hard to tell which. the manifold and where it's stamped p73 is somewhat hard to fake. if you were really paranoid you could check the head bolts to see if they have been taken off. all that that would prove is if the motor was ever disassembled though. i have no idea who painted that god awful valve cover. a can of vht wrinkle plus is only 10 bucks and it will give you an oem finish with solid prep work. p72 should be on the block as it's a b18c block, your rods likely have p72 stamped in them as well
if you bought this thing from a jdm importer all they do is buy front clips and part them out. chances are it came right out of a cut up itr and was shipped to you

Re: Do I have a real type R?
The ITR and GSR blocks are the SAME....thats why it says P72, that doesnt mean its not an ITR. In my opinion I think you have an ITR. THe next step is to take valve cover off and look at springs.... ITR has dual valve springs on both intake and exhaust. Also pull a cap off and Identify the cams... that will give you the best answer.

Why would you buy an "ITR motor" without doing your homework first. Do you not trust your source?
And all of your questions are easily answered by doing a search, either on here or google.

Re: Do I have a real type R?
as todd said, the cams on the dizzy side will have unique grooves in them that ID them as to their profile and ultimately what motor they are originally from. search is your friend man.

All of the b18c bare blocks are cast identically and stamped p72. Alot of the gsr p72 pieces are reused on itr's, check your cam gears, they are stamped pr3 for because they were originally designed for a b16

Also on another forum I heard that jdm gsr serial numbers under b18c start with 10xxx... Itr early models start with 19xxx.. And 20xxx for 98 spec and up.

Re: Do I have a real type R?
So in this case every jdm itr is stamped p72. How bout my head? Seems like I have a vtec oil pressure switch and I heard jdm engines don't have it? Yes I have searched and no answer.

Dude, your running circles talking about nothing of any relevence..... ALL ITR's USE B16 heads....same casting.... pressure switch is irrelevent also, you may have USDM Vtec sol. bottom line for a definative answer is to look at the cams..... if they are ITR cams, it is safe to say that 99.999999999999999% you have an ITR engine.

Like others have stated, pull the valve cover and check the valve springs. Then possibly check the cams.
Another thing I noticed is that you have full studs for the exhaust manifold. All ITR heads Ive seen just have the 2 outside studs, rest are bolts. Could have been changed though.
Could always drop the pan and look at the crank. Easy to identify.

Re: Do I have a real type R?
Crap. I thought he meant the Accord Type R and I was thinking about the H-series motor. So with that, disregard everything I have said.
