Default Custom Water Bypass Valve.

I wrote earlier that my POS AEM bybass valve was coming apart. Instead of ordering another one I decided that I'd rather make one myself.

1. Found stock air filter. Removed the end piece and the rubber joint at the end of the filter. This leavers nothing but the filter element and the metal frame that supports it.

2. Buy some aluminum tape from the store. Using this I wrapped my entire intake pipe(this part is optional). I wrapped the ends of my AEM where the Bypass valve used to be on each piece. This was to build up the diameter of the pipe so that it would fit snuggly into the stock air filter.

3. Reassemble intake like before, but instead of where the AEM bypass valve was I slid my stock air filter between the two pieces of piping. Make sure the filter fits over each pipe rather snug (this is why you built up the ends with the tape).

4. Now that the filter is on the pipe, seal the outer edge of the filter so that there are no gaps for unfiltered air to enter.

5. Attach the K&N to its original location. Tighten everything up and your done.

I tested the filter as a bypass by plugging the end of the filter with a cup. It of course worked fine allowing the engine to breath as normal. At low rpms the engine will tend to suck from the stock filter, but at high rpms it pulls it through the K&N filter. Air will of course flow through the path of least resistance and the K&N is much less resistant than the stock air filter. Oh, yeah for what ever legal reasons do this at you own risk.

Air will flow through both at any rpm. The most air will flow through the path of least resistance, but not all. I still don't understand what you are trying to accomplish with this whole thing... sounds like you just made the whole cold air concept less effective, and detuned your intake, lowered air velocity at the top, and wasted a lot of aluminum tape

In the event you submereged the standard K & N, yes the air would go through the stock filter, but it's not in any way a valve.

I know the Cold air effect has been dimished some what, but I am more content with my own work than worrying about another Bypass valve breaking and possibly getting more plastic sucked into my engine (if it even did in the first place).

Someone told me the following is a good solution.

Take a 2 litter coke bottle. Cut the top off. Slide the bottom of the bottle over the bottom of the intake where the filter is. Attach it however you think is best.

If you actually submerge the filter, it's not going to matter. It would probably keep the filter a lot cleaner though.
