check engine light trouble
This started a couple weeks ago when m check engine light came on. I checked what code was being thrown and it was #71, running lean I believe. I replaced the spark plugs and it ran fine for about a week with no problems. Earlier this week the engine started feeling sluggish at intermitent times and the check engine light would flash a few times and go back out. Earlier today I just changed the distributer car, rotor, spark plug wires and ignitor coil. After resetting the idle memory I drove home and the car had the same symptoms as earlier. I tried to check the engine code again, but when the connector was jumpered the check engine light stayed lit(without flashing at all) and the SRS and ABS lights flashed with pretty long pauses between each flash.
I'm not sure what to check now because I cant get the code, can anyone point me in the right direction on what to do?
UPDATE: I replaced the fuel filter and this seems to have solved the problem. If anyone tells you the fuel filter is a non-maintenaince item this is B.S.

is your immobilizer removed from your ecu?
i dont have an immobilizer, so my CEL stays on costantly and I have to use the SRS or ABS lights to get the codes because my CEL doesnt blink, its stays solid. the SRS or ABS are the lights that show my codes.
so, try to read the SRS or ABS blinks to see if they are flashing codes or not. otherwise, Im not sure why your CEL would suddenly stay on and not blink when trying to check codes.

My immobilizer is still in place. I was able to pull the CEL successfully about 2 weeks ago. The SRS and ABS lights dont flash in any discernible pattern. Thanks though
If you leave the connector jumped when there is no CEL's, the computer does a sensor check for ABS and SRS, which causes them to flash on the gauge cluster.
Remove the jumper and see if the CEL comes on.

Easy maintenance items are first to check.
Fuel filter is cheap and easy to fix.
Also try cleaning the MAP sensor, you may have a piece of dirt/sand stuck in there causing sporadic readings.
