Default Cali - Front Plate law?

Hey guys, just curious... I'm not sure if any of you know, but I could not find it on the Cali DMV website: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/ -- If your car has a front bumper that cannot equip a front license plate, i.e. C-West, Mugen, etc, is one still required on the front? I see many Camaros and Corvettes with no room for plates, and it seems that the DMV only mails those owners 1 plate anyway.. Basically, I don't want to order a C-West front bumper or anything like that, and still get fined.

you will get fined. CA has a 2 plate law...many try to take off the front plate, and sometimes they get caught. I believe its like a 80 dollar fine...

if you want to throw away your hardearned cash, this seems to be a way to do it...

Yes, you will still need to. Most mercedes, BMWs etc don't have holes for the plate so some people just drill holes into the bumper

Yeah, I'm still waiting on my notice for my $10 ticket... It actually kinda works here, like think about it: You don't put your front plate on - you get a fix it ticket. You leave the front plate off until your notice comes in the mail 30 days later. You put the plate on and get the fix it ticket signed off, then you take it off again until you get pulled over again. Then you leave it off for the 30 days until the notice comes, etc etc.. So really you never have to put it on.

i've never heard of those kinds of hefty fines... i've had bad luck 3 times and it's just a fixit ticket with a small inspection fee/filing fee. sux.

The ticket is written at the officer's discretion. He can either classify it as a fix-it ticket that will cost you about $10, or he can write it up as a moving violation (in certain jurisdictions - namely the ones that have red light cameras) and you will have to pay $270.

Can I stop "pinch posting" now or what? Strong Beach back in the house!

I got pulled over and ticketed for no front plate THEN a modified exhaust. How? The chp was in front of me and for some reason unknown to me at the time, he slowed down and pulled right behind me. A few seconds later, the lights came on and he pulled me over. I guess he must have seen me in his rear view w/out a front plate...got it written off, still had to pay $12.

sure, mang....funny what kinda things bring you back to a place. thanks for the pinch posting, btw. (:

i remember there being word (in local news and papers) that the state of ca was thinking about changing the NFP ticket over to a moving violation (although that sounded BS-ey, to me), but that never materialized, as far as I know...

-k-b0t, who needs to find a hyundai accent forum...

It's not what we are doing, but the fact that we drive import cars, and Fast & Furious came out, and cops think we are all racers..

Chris - who wanted a Camaro SS just because cops don't harass dumbestic owners.

FYI- By law, or so they told me, Audi will not and cannot let a new car leave the lot without the front license plate frame installed.

its about 25 in the bay area. I've gotten this ticket before only at street races. I mean theyre just scrutinizing every detail if they catch you just being there.

tip: tape the dealer's sticker on your windshield. You know the one you had on when u first bought the car.

So far so good. I've had cops slow down and stare me down ..but they just drive away..maybe because of the sticker?

Yea I'm pretty sure its just a fix it ticket, I've got one before.

What YodaIsGod said is right, but for those of you who put it up in the windshield, the law states that you can only cover a 7 x 7 inch area in the lower left hand corner.

Have any of you been pulled over just because of no plate, or was it for other reasons (e.g. speeding)?

I got a fix it ticket awhile back for no front plate, but that was only after I got pulled over for speeding (good thing I didn't get ticketed for that!) I still don't run a plate now, and don't worry about it anymore like I used to. On the other hand, I don't live where cops are **** about those things either.

BTW, showing the plate through the windshield makes it more noticeable to the cop that your plate isn't where it's supposed to be.
