Default Advancing timing

I have a 94 GSR engine in my hatch and my buddy has a 99 ITR motor in his. We both tried avancing the timing to 18 degrees but when we turn the distributor fully, it will only go to 17 degrees!! Now this happened to both of our cars....has anyone else experienced this before?? What can be wrong?

Did you short out the service connector?

Are you using a timing gun with or without an adjustment dial?

I don' think there is a adjustment dial on that gun.....but i am not too sure. Are you suspecting that the timing gun could be off??

Just another stupid question but is it hooked to cylinder 1? Also make sure you are looking straight down on the little marker on the block. What colors does the timing gun make the marks on the pulley?

Yeah....it's hooked up to cylinder one. I can see the red mark on the pulley with 2 little black grooves on either side of it. I am assuming that the marks are +/- 2 degrees from the red mark (16 degrees). I will try another timing gun first.

Did you see where the pulley indicated it was set to before you moved the distributor? Also was the car completely warmed up at idling at 750 +/- 50 RPMs? I would probably try another timing gun. Max advance on the distributor is about 26 degrees BTDC from what I've been told on stock cam settings.

No, I'm suspecting that if you have a timing gun with a dial and you set it to 18 degrees and are then using the 18 degree mark to adjust....it won't ever happen. If you don't have and adjustment on the gun, then use the red mark (18 degrees). If you do have an adjustment, set it to 18, and then use the mark at TDC (it's white I think). If you still have problems, and the gun is hooked up correctly, get another one.

do you have adjustable cam gears, because if you have the intake cam adjusted to far in one direction it could limit how much room you have to play with ignition timing, since your distributor is driven off of your intake cam.

just a thought

I thought the red mark is 16 degrees? I have mine a little set past the red.

Yeah...it was set at the mark before the red on the crank hence i thought i was running at 14 degrees. The car was full warmed up cause i actaully drove it to my friend's house who had the timing gun. HOLY CRAP!! Are you sure it's 26 degrees fully advanced? If that is the case, i could be doing some serious damage to my motor!!! But i don't here any knocking or wierd noises. Infact, i noticed better gas mileage already....hummm.

That's what the RealTime Type R's run. Full mechanical advance using 110 octane racing gas. I can not figure out why you are only getting 17 degrees BTDC at full advance. It's not the first time I've heard this problem though...

I am starting to think that i have a bad distributor. Reason for saying this is because we tried my buddies' ITR, EK/ITR hybrid, and my car and the other 2 is fine (all done with the same timing light). Both got BTDC of 16 without advancing the distributor fully. But with mine, it's a different story. I can remember when i put in my ITR cams (last year), i timed my car and it was at 16 BTDC but this time when i tried advancing the timing this year, i only got like 13 BTDC before playing with the distributor. So i mysteriously lost 3 degrees somewhere. As well, i started to notice really bad gas mileage for the past couple months while developing a wierd intermitted starting problem. What parts in the distributor can go bad? I know there is a igniter but what else? What else can be replaced in the distributor??

Maybe your cam timing is retarded a tooth on the timing belt. I did it once, I only idled it, It idled fine, then I was lining the gears back up but they didn't. I feel that I got real lucky that I didn't damage anything.

i dunno, i dont really like the idea of using a hotter plug, your motor will get hotter while in track. and it will course power down too.
if for street only, well, not a bad idea.

I will check that tonight too. I was starting to think maybe that can be it. But i have tracked, driven the car like this for at least 1.5 years already. If i was off by a tooth, wouldn't i of damaged some parts already??
