I have a 94 GSR engine in my hatch and my buddy has a 99 ITR motor in his. We both tried avancing the timing to 18 degrees but when we turn the distributor fully, it will only go to 17 degrees!! Now this happened to both of our cars....has anyone else experienced this before?? What can be wrong?
Did you short out the service connector?

I don' think there is a adjustment dial on that gun.....but i am not too sure. Are you suspecting that the timing gun could be off??
Are you using a timing gun with or without an adjustment dial?

Just another stupid question but is it hooked to cylinder 1? Also make sure you are looking straight down on the little marker on the block. What colors does the timing gun make the marks on the pulley?

Yeah....it's hooked up to cylinder one. I can see the red mark on the pulley with 2 little black grooves on either side of it. I am assuming that the marks are +/- 2 degrees from the red mark (16 degrees). I will try another timing gun first.
Did you see where the pulley indicated it was set to before you moved the distributor? Also was the car completely warmed up at idling at 750 +/- 50 RPMs? I would probably try another timing gun. Max advance on the distributor is about 26 degrees BTDC from what I've been told on stock cam settings.

do you have adjustable cam gears, because if you have the intake cam adjusted to far in one direction it could limit how much room you have to play with ignition timing, since your distributor is driven off of your intake cam.

If you don't have and adjustment on the gun, then use the red mark (18 degrees).

That's what the RealTime Type R's run. Full mechanical advance using 110 octane racing gas. I can not figure out why you are only getting 17 degrees BTDC at full advance. It's not the first time I've heard this problem though...

Maybe your cam timing is retarded a tooth on the timing belt. I did it once, I only idled it, It idled fine, then I was lining the gears back up but they didn't. I feel that I got real lucky that I didn't damage anything.
i dunno, i dont really like the idea of using a hotter plug, your motor will get hotter while in track. and it will course power down too.
if for street only, well, not a bad idea.

I will check that tonight too. I was starting to think maybe that can be it. But i have tracked, driven the car like this for at least 1.5 years already. If i was off by a tooth, wouldn't i of damaged some parts already??
