Default 4,000 RPM at 70mph = JDM ITR Final Drive?

Like the topic says, I just got the swap in my hatch and I noticed it sits at 4k on the highway at 70mph. My 98 R is at 3,700-3,800 at 70mph. So does this mean i have a JDM 98 Spec ITR tranny?

TIA

Can't say for sure but i am definitely leaning towards yes. I know that the 4.40 puts you at about 4200 RPMs at approximately 80, so i would be willing to say that you do have the 4.785 . Anyone agree...?

Matches very well with my ITR, and the Euro spec uses the same tranny as a 98 JDM.

That's where mine sits about and I do have the JDM final drive.

Don't forget we have a different 4th and 5th gear too compared to the USDM.

i think my 4.4 f/d in my 96spec ITR is around 3700-3800rpm at 70mph...i'll check in a while and post back, but i think you may have the 4.4 f/d. I know for a fact that 60mph is approx 3200-3300rpm so i'd imagine 70 would be around 3700/3800

Update: I have just been out for a spin and in my 96 ITR with 4.4 f/d 70mph = 3800rpm exactly so you got a 98spec tranny.

You should not stare blind at the final gear only.
You should multiply the final gear with the 5th gear for comparison!!!!

The 5th gear is also different between USDM/96JDM and 98JDM/EURO!!!

JDM 98 total: 4.785 x 0.787 = 3.765795
USDM total: 4.400 x 0.848 = 3.7312

The difference is small: about 1%

I think many in this thread are overlooking this

Difference in 5th gear highway cruising speed will only be noticable if you are running JDM FD with USDM gearset (notably 4th and 5th). In other words, if FD was swaped in as opposed to the whole tranny being 98Spec JDM/Euro.

The 98Spec JDM/Euro 4th and 5th gears compensate for the higher FD to maintain comparable top speed / fuel economy of the 96Spec/USDM tranny.

Don't forget that the ITR tach can also read a couple hundred high, so you are not necessarily looking at the "actual" rpm... I'm sure most people with stock ITR trannys here are looking at around 4 grand when going 70mph, so the "yep, 4k here" you've been getting applies to anyone who has a stock tranny, JDM or otherwise, and will not tell you if you have the 98 Spec JDM tranny. (As DutchITR has been trying to say ).

The sure fire "apples-to-apples" way would be to compare speeds of 1st ( ), 2nd ( ) and 3rd ( ).

For example, in 5th:

JDM 98Spec = 72.5mph @ 4k, USDM ITR = 73.1mph @ 4k. I'm sure most people cannot tell the difference of 0.6mph, especially with questionable tachs...

However if we look at 3rd gear:

JDM 98Spec = 68.4mph @ 7k, USDM ITR = 74.4mph @ 7k. That is a much more reasonable spread to be looking at on the highway.

Some of them were talking about USDM gearbox + 98 JDM final drive.
And some were talking about full 98 spec JDM gearbox....
