Default windshield wiper problem, help

im gonna try to explain this the best way i can so maybe you guys can give me some advice. When my wipers are on, they go way too far over past the windshield and onto the side of my car. They also go onto the black thing under the wipers.
When they are off there is a lot of play, and i can move the wipers up atleast 6 inches up. I dont know if i need a new motor, and i figure since i move the driver wiper and the passenger side moves also that its one motor. anyone have this problem or know what i should try? thanks.

Ah, this is a common problem.

I totally forget the fix on it. It's nothing major, I dont think.

Good lord mine do the same thing...I hate it! I posted about this a while ago, and I remember someone saying to tighten the main bolt the wipers rotate on b/c it's probably loose...I haven't tried it yet though...

LOL that's pretty useful

How about this... There's a little cover down at the pivot of each wiper arm, pop that off so you see a nut holding the arm to its shaft. Loosen the nut, wiggle the wiper arm so its loose (the shaft is tapered). Now position the wipers in their proper parked position, and tighten the nut. Put the cap back on.

Okay, here's the diagram...you remove #21, then where's this nut you have to tighten?

Just take them off. Put two coats of wax and two coats of rain-x and you should be good.

#21 is the nut.

And I know it may sound stupid, but you could just run with the passenger wiper arm until you get it fixed (since the arms go farther each way than they're supposed to). Just position it so it wipes most of the windshield by itself.

#21 IS the nut. I was thinking of the Saab, it has a little plastic cap covering the nut. Sorry.

Its definantly not the nut since they both move further than they are supposed to and has serious play when they are off. I dont think you are supposed to be able to move your wipers are just resting. I think the motor is worn or the piece that tells them to stop is out of place. Im gonna take them off today and get a good look at them.

I read it again...

My original idea was that the arm had slipped on the shaft, but it really sounds like a pivot bushing is really loose. You shouldn't be able to move them much. See where all the motion is, like which part in the picture above. Sounds like something real loose on the crank (#8) or the pushrods (#12, 13).

You don't have the wrong motor or the wrong crank in there, do you? The crank has to be the right length to control what angle the arm swings.

Seriously, that is what I do to my windshield. I have my wipers just in case, but I never (and I mean never) use them. I make sure I put two extra thick layers of wax on and then coat it with at least one layer of rain-x and it works like a charm. Of course, when I am sitting still it doesn't fall off that great b/ once I start moving it works.

Try it, and if it doesn't work then try and fix your wipers.

I went out and positioned the wipers so that they were further down. It didnt go past the windshield but it wasnt wet so that might make a difference. Im gonna do the wax and rain-x thing so maybe i wont have to use the wipers. thanks guys.

The joints at the ends of rods #12 and 13 are probably worn, causing the play. You might try ordering new bushing inserts for the rod ends, but you should inspect the linkage first and try to determine for sure what the actual problem is.
