Wheel Stud Installation
While rotating my tires I broke off a peice of one fo the front right wheel stud. I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge pertaining to the installation of a new wheel stud. And is it safe to ride around with only 3 lugs???
Studs are pressed in. To replace a stud the wheel hub has to be removed, the old stud has to be pressed out and a new one pressed in. I wouldnt drive it unless you have to, because 4 stud cars really need all 4 studs holding the wheel on whether driving hard or not. Take it slow as possible around the bends, dont go over 45, and drive it to an auto shop where they can press a new stud in for you.
I drove with 2 lugs for 3 months on a 5 lug wheel. As long as they are tight, 3 will be fine.
Replacing them is a cinch- pound out the old stud w/ a hammer, get a new one, push it into the hole, and use a lug nut to pull it up tight. Once you torgue the wheel it will be fine.
