To a certain point you're buying the name, you're also paying for a better quality product, I've seen cheaper "eBay" shifters break though. When you buy a name brand product you're buying the R&D that comes from a real company, sooner or later the more knock offs that get bought the more real companies that will go out of business. After that there will be no after market and therefore nothing to knock off, that's why I always buy the real deal, it's worth it to keep the products coming.
I really wouldn't trust an eBay short shifter or any aluminum one for that matter. They have a high tendency to break from what people say on various forums. Just go with the tried and true Skunk2 and not have anything to worry about. Cheap stuff usually means cheap quality so you will eventually have to replace it when something goes wrong later on and spend just as much money in the end.
ON SALE! i already got mines GET THIS **** WONT BREAK LIKE SHITTY EBAY

Skunk2 uses steel and is heavier and stronger than the cheap eBay aluminum shifters. There are other alternatives to Skunk2 such as MFactory (pretty much the same as Sk2) and Buddy Club. Both use steel.

a friend of mine broke an ebay shifter switching into third gear a little to ohard apparently haha. I would go with Skunk2 or B&M, both quality. Skunk2 comes with the name.

Skunk2 shifters are nice. But I have an AutoZone $40 short throw that I bought nearly EIGHT YEARS ago and I've never had a single problem with it. And yes, I have done my fair share of hard shifting. The shifter height is the same as stock, but the throws are much shorter. It has metal bearings in the bottom, unlike other POS shifters (B&M included) where you have to re-use the stock rubber crap from the stock shifter, which makes the shifter feel sloppy.
Most of the time I've used shift ***** that attach with set screws below the threaded portion of the shifter, which I'm sure helps prevent the shifter from breaking. But right now I'm using my stock shifter on the threads and still no problems.
