What's the problem? Won't turn over... or won't "catch?"

what oil are you running? 5w-30 is good for cold weather.

Well, if it's cranking (turning over), you'll hear it going r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r like it's TRYING to start, but it won't actually start. Could be weak spark, too little fuel, thick oil...

It sounds to me more like a weak or dead battery. Try jump starting it. Or, if it's a M/T, give it a push with clutch in, in gear, and key on, and then pop the clutch. If it starts with either of these methods, then it's the battery.

The next question would be "Why?" Why did the battery die? Either it's shot or the alternator isn't charging it.

i though it was a dead battery since it sounded like one so I had it replaced. I still have the problem though. It took me half an hour to get it started today. I step on the brake while turning the ignnition and it started. coincidence? I don't know

Hmmm. Did the shop that sold you the battery check your charging system, or did you just walk in and buy a battery?

BTW, do you have an A/T or M/T?

a/t. they didn't check the charging system. not sure what that means. it's my mechanic so he just replaced my old one with a new one. he checked to see if the alt. was ok. he told me just change the battery for now since the old one is low and if the problem continue bring it back. I'm thinking of bringing it back but I don't always have this problem. Only when its really cold. I live in NY so its not that cold. I could go a week without having a problem. it has to be weather related.

No, it also could be your charging system is bad and it takes a week for the battery to crap out.

Strange. Anyway, I was just flipping through the owner's manual for my car (Acura Vigor) and it says, to start the car (A/T)... "(3) Make sure the shift lever is in Park. Press on the brake pedal."

Could there be an interlock? Nah. You probably start the car the same way every time by rote habit. Anyway, some guesses (and at this point, that's ALL they are -- guesses):

• Main Relay going bad -- it'll cut off fuel to the engine. It'll crank fine but won't start. Usually starts going bad intermittantly
• Does your car have throttle body injection with a cold-start injector?
• Bad thermoswitch -- the engine "thinks" it's warm when it's really cold -- it won't give the engine enough fuel to start when cold
• Weak spark (caused by a marginal coil)

Would it be possible to drop off the car at your mechanic's some night when there's going to be a cold spell? Then he'll be able to see how it behaves in cold weather.

BTW, the "charging system" is the battery, alternator, and their associated wiring and switches. It sounds like your mechanic checked this already.
