Default weird temperature problem

i had my fuel injections cleaned yesterday and a new catbak exhaust installed today on my gsi....but i only noticed today that i had a really weird temperature readings...when i'm at a stop or near stop. the temperature goes up skywards...almost to the red line, but as soon as i start moving or accelerating the temp. reading drops immediately. (manual car)
any suggestions would be great...don't want to see the engine overheating

Is your coolant level okay? Check your thermostat. Take it out and toss it in boiling water to see if it works. Or just remove the thermostat and drive the car. Does the water temp gauge stay lower and doesn't give you a problem anymore? If so, it's your thermostat.

yea, i have to agree w/ everyone on here, its most likely you radiator not being fully flushed, having air bubbles in there will cause that....thermostat gone bad too...try using some high performance additive in the coolant...

erm. to be honest. i don't know very much. eg. where the thermostat is or the water temp gauge. isn't the temp readings in the dash directly linked to the thermostat?
so do i need to add more stuff into the coolant? or buy a new thermostat? and if this problem prolongs, is it going to effect my engine adversely?
thanks

i just remembered something. when i got my injectors cleaned. they said my radiator hose is swollen. could it have anything to do with that?

i just opened up the radiator cap...there's nothing in there??? :s
and i have no idea how to take the thermostat out, i looked in my manual and i cant find it under the engine somewhere. and i'd have no idea which two hoses to touch

okaiz. i went to the dealer just then, it looks like a new thermostat is needed...sigh...that's another 200 bux down the drain >< GRRR...btw the pics are up

First and foremost, make sure you have a full radiator. Make sure the engine is cold before you remove the cap, or you'll have hot scaulding coolant all over you!

Second: easy thermostat check: start the car and let it idle until it starts to get hot. Now touch the upper and lower hoses (be careful). If the upper hose is touchable, but the lower hose is so hot you can't put your hand around it, then the thermostat is bad.

Third: If both hoses are about the same temp to touch, and the thing is still getting hot, see if your fans are running. They probably aren't. If that's the case here are possible culprits: bad fan switch, or fan relay. Try turning on your AC and see if the fans come on. If they do, it's likely that the switch is bad.

Fourth: an RS is a DC4

Fifth: throw another shrimp on the barbie! (sorry had to throw that one in there!)

No! Stop right there! Don't pay $200 for the dealer to do your thermostat. It is VERY VERY easy. Look it up here on HT for instructions, or go to your local auto parts store and pick up a cheap Haynes/Chiltons manual and use that.

It should take you about 15 minutes (even if you know nothing about cars) just following the simple directions. The thermostat should cost you about $8. It's quite possibly easier than an oil change. Yeah, in fact I think it is.

EDIT: Here's a quick link to show you how. To make it easier, you don't even have to drain all your coolant, but you should to get all new fluid in there and make sure there are no bubbles in the system after you're done.

i agree, $200 is a little much.

also, instead of cracking the drain loose on the rad to drain it you could siphen out the fluid using a small tube and store it in a bottle and re-use if it's in good shape.

My car does this too, but only when low on coolant. Top it off and I bet it will be fine. If not try the steps these guys just recomended.

If only the condensor fan turns on when your car is overheating that is not good. Both fans should be on. This might be part of your problem.
