Default weird question

anything wrong with taking a plug wire out and checking the spark against a bolt while its running?

dont take it out wile its running but yea thats how you check for spark

yeah for a couple of seconds

im just asking if it could cause any problems because i did it on my buddies stock civic and a couple of minutes later it stopped running, even though after i put the wire back it was fine for a few minutes he is trying to blame it on me

Exactly. It's not a real 'problem' but it's not a good idea.

i did it with my gsr...nothing wrong happened ...i did with like 2 pistons...stupid but had to be done...turns out it was the damn distributar rotor

so you dont think i could have done any harm to it, not anything that would make the car stop running?

i remember someone doing that while trying to test something. he fried a part of his distributor. sorry but i think you're at fault.

if your coil blows your car will not run...

the frying of the dizzy the above poster speaks of is what i said earlier...frying the coil

No. Sometimes, you can do this to see if a certain spark plug wire isn't getting power from the distributor like it normally should. If everything is working correctly, and you pull the wire from cylindar one, your engine will bog down. Now, assuming cylindar one wasn't firing like normal and you pulled the plug and nothing happened. You could think your distrubutor cap was bad, or maybe the spark plug, or that specific wire.
